What it means to go home

Post by Clar-i-ty » Mon Jun 28, 2010 8:29 pm

I was talking to my son tonight as we drove to get some dinner.

"Hey, know what I was just thinking about?" I asked.

"Hmm?"

"That moment when we are waiting in line for the gate on the Playa, and everyone around us is happy and excited to be there."

His face changed into a peaceful grin. "Yeah, that's just like..."

"...a relief," I said, finishing his thought.

"Yeah, it just feels so good to be there, and then when we get into the city and see Center Camp...I really want to go to the Playa again."

"We will." I assured him. "There's no place like home."

There you are, maybe 7 or 8 years old. It's late May or June, and you're sitting at your desk in school. It's sometime in the afternoon. Warm weather, can't stop looking out the window.

Suddenly, the bell rings. School's out for the summer!

Going home is kinda like that.

if only it were three months long
We have an obligation to make space for everyone, we have no obligation to make that space pleasant.

I felt like that my first day, and realized why it lasts only a week on my 5th. Although three months would be really fun...

When we get to the gates I usually feel intense relief, joy, and a need to find a porta pottie immediately after sitting in line for so long.

Home is about the people and the individual experiences we have. Oh and it's about the Home Brew too.

I get out of our vehicle and it's this mix of RELIEF and this incredible, indescribable glow of JOY and LOVE and EXCITEMENT. What will the week hold? What adventures (and hardships) will occur? I'M HOME!!!!!!!

Wow, I just had a sudden sense memory of that feeling... third grade. There was almost a flavor to it. The last couple of days, not much being done, just waiting, and feeling like school was already over. No more expectations or undone tasks. Just release.
