Wearing a watch on the playa (sand etc)

Post by red arrow » Thu Jul 01, 2010 10:38 am

last time i went i wore a cheapy digital watch i bought in CVS, it worked fine and the sand didnt break it

i have a nice watch that somebody bought me last xmas, i wear it all the time and would like to wear it to BM but not sure if its worth it

anyones watch broke from sand on the playa? not sure if itd be a great idea to bring it as its not digital

hmm
probs best to leave it packed away and buy another crappy one i guess

id love to not wear a watch at all but there will be events and stuff that i want to go to so unfortunately time will still remain a factor in day to day playa life :P

I've always worn watches, and I've never had one fail as a result of having it on the playa. Your mileage will vary directly with the value of the watch you wear.

All those people who claim not to need a watch on the playa are always asking me what time it is.

I haven't worn a watch for over ten years, When we do need one, we use a carbiner watch clipped onto a pack. No irritating dust under the band that way and we don't care if we lose it. You can even get them in dollar stores.

I'm one of those people who doesn't wear one out there. Frankly, I make it or I don't- I'm on vacation & I refuse to go by any schedule. If someone wants to meet me at a certain time I just tell them it isn't going to happen.

I also tend to just kind of go with the flow of whatever group I'm hanging out with on playa, and that can change from day to day.

The only negative to this is that I have yet to make the meet 'n greet because I keep forgetting about it until too late. I'm actually planning on putting a piece of paper with that event on it next to my bed to remind me- the only plan I'm making for the whole week.

Our camp cooks group meals, so showing up when there's still food is important to me. I wear a watch. Never had a problem. All my watches are waterproof, so there's never been an issue of dust getting inside.

Is time necessary on the Playa? I was thinking of getting lost in time...

All one needs is a water proof (ok, water resistant) watch. Since I need to be places at particular times, I not only wear a watch, but have a very loud alarm clock that helps me get there.
I have blocks of free time that I flow-go and end up wherever.

your mileage may very!

I am not sure "sand" is the correct description of the playa dust. It is extremely fine powder.

I always wear a watch on the playa so that I can brag that I stayed up later than everyone else in my crew.

call it voyeurism, if you must, but, even people watching in the airport is fun.

I know Big Brother watches....

I haven't worn a watch all my adult life. I just walk up to someone like phil and say, "hi friend, what time is it." He gets the heat, dust, uneven tan, sweat, and we both share the time. Thanks phil

What a guy that phil is.....

:D
For four years I have kept missing events that I wanted to catch, like the E-playa Meet-n-Greet, so this year I intend to carry a travel alarm clock.

And I'm going to push a piano off a tower at Noon Sunday, and I really want to be there when I do that.

So my vote is for an alarm clock.

My watch will be buckled onto my belt. No tan line, well except the underwear lines that will already be there. But I hope SPF 70 will be enough. Maybe look up SPF 666 again. I wonder if she still makes it. Hmmm.

Anyways, there are ways to wear watches without getting the odd tan.

Jerk.

:-> Just kidding, just kidding ... .

Uneven tans lines are built in for me, since I have vitiligo. Of course, I haven't tried SPF666, and that seems promising.

I used to be black till I got vitiligo.

FaeTora- I'm a pasty redhead who fries in the sun- I just cake on waterproof spf 50 and have never gotten burned out there.

Of course, I only wash my face, hands & "bits" daily (maybe one shower the whole week) and keep caking on sunblock over layers of more sunblock & dust, but it works like a charm! And, damn, we're all dusty anyways.

A cheap $6 POS crap watch from Wally's World should work fine since:

1. youll likely break it or
2. you'll lose it.

LOL

You have to have a watch or a Phil to work shifts, though some work is more flexible that others.

I've worn my good watch out there, the simpsons one that says "Are we there yet?"

I've never owned a fine watch. Campmor timex hot deal, and it usually lasts about three years, then I get another. Each time I shop for something nice, I end up getting a timex, thinking I'll trash it, and it works fine for a long time. certainly playa worthy.
