DVD, this thread is titled "Politics, Everyday, All day .... morning, noon and night .....II"

it is NOT titled "Prove DVDBurner Wrong!!!!!"

if i create such a thread, and promise to attempt to prove you wrong on a regular basis, will you let the rest of us discuss politics on this thread in peace??

last year methinks there were a great many posts about the election. trishntek asked why. you are why .... you think this thread is about you. you are entitled to your opinion, and we all respect that. nobody wants to prove you wrong. we just want to discuss things, you know? and you make it impossible. perhaps you don't mean to, but you do.

U.S. discovers $1 trillion Afghan mineral deposits: report

(Reuters) - Afghanistan could be holding $1 trillion of untapped mineral deposits including critical industrial metals such as lithium, the New York Times reported, quoting U.S. government officials.

http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE6 ... me=topNews

The previously unknown deposits of iron, copper, cobalt and gold are so huge that it could transform the impoverished nation into one of the world's important mining centers, the report on the newspaper's website said. (www.nytimes.com/)

The mineral wealth, discovered by a team of Pentagon officials and U.S. geologists, is scattered throughout the country including in the south and east along the border with Pakistan, where the Taliban-led insurgency is the most intense.

"There is stunning potential here," the newspaper quoted General David Petraeus, commander of the U.S. Central Command, as saying in an interview at the weekend. "There are lots of ifs, of course, but I think potentially it is hugely significant."

An internal Pentagon memo said Afghanistan could become the "Saudi Arabia of lithium," the New York Times said. Lithium is a key raw material in the manufacture of batteries for laptops and other electronics such as mobile telephones.

Afghanistan does not have any mining industry or infrastructure, so it will take decades for the country to exploit its mineral wealth fully, the paper quoted U.S. officials as saying.

The report about the country's untapped wealth is likely to intensify competition among regional players such as China, India and even Russia for a greater role in exploiting those resources.

Two Chinese firms have committed themselves to a $4 billion investment in the vast Aynak copper mine, south of Kabul, the biggest non-military foreign investment so far in the country.

Another big contract to mine an estimated 1.8 billion tons of high-quality iron ore in the remote mountainous region of Hajigak is expected to open for international bidding this year.

Firms from India and China are eyeing the contract, which the Afghan mines ministry says is the largest unmined iron deposit in Asia.

According to the U.S. study, the biggest deposits discovered so far are of iron and copper and the quantities are large enough to make Afghanistan a major world producer.

Other finds include large deposits of niobium, a soft metal used in producing superconducting steel, rare earth elements and large gold deposits in Pashtun areas of southern Afghanistan.

There are a few major problems with the graph. One it doesn't specify if it segments public-funded private schools and public schools. In some states a portion of a child's education in private school will be covered by the public school system. Furthermore, we would need to discount all home schoolers who may or may not (depending on the parent) be educated to the same standard but will be tested and, in some cases graduate with the school inwhich the program is run through. Lastly we would need to adjust for the number of children in the public education system. A massive increase or decrease in a population will effect monetary spending.

Personally, I see the huge problem with education not to be money but class size and taking the power to teach away from the teachers. In a high school where most of the kids dropped out, I was taught by some of the best teachers I have ever had. When I switched to a school with a low drop out rate and was state recognized for its "excellent academics" I was given multiple choice tests and fill in the blank worksheets. The only thing I learned is boredom. I honestly slept in 2/3rds of my classes as I didnt have anything left to do half way through except to take exams.

In college, I taught english to english speakers who could not make a high enough test score to go into regular college English. Most of them could not pick out a noun or a verb from a sentence and most believed all essays were 5 paragraphs long. I felt so bad for those kids. Most of them worked hard, well beyond the three hours of class and the three hours of work a week we gave them. Some even came in for extra help 3 or 4 times a week just to pass a non-graded class and learn what the public education system hadn't been able to do in 13 years.

The reality is kids need attention, they need help and sadly, most kids don;t get it in the system. I'll leave my rant about parenting out of this. But I remember having teachers in school sit with me during recess and help we with what I didn't understand. We had groups where kids who were ahead of the game taught the ones who didn't and EVERY student got face time with the teacher each day to ask questions and get personalized help.

Oh and by the way, do you realize standardized tests grade for an 8th grade understanding for high school seniors?

Anyways, ::jumps off soap box::

Sort of but not really. A long time ago school stopped at 8th grade unless you went to college. So basically we are taking more time to get the same results.

I think education suffers, partly, due to parents just turning the whole thing, even personal responsibility, over to the schools...........
Teachers spend a ton of time teaching things the parents should deal with......and dealing with issues taught by the parents.......

and, so many parents, never challenge their children to learn, and think......
or try to educate them about stuff, maybe, the school missed or glossed over........
They just want the school to do it all...........

oh trust me I know. Like I said I wasn't going to get into my issues with parenting. thats another soap box.

Parents these dayd seem to have forgot to parent. I am a try old school village person (as in it takes a village to raise a child). I WILL talk to a child who curses or is disrespectful or out of line. I once was in a toy store and this kid told his mother off for not buying him a toy. I dropped to one knee and looked him in the eye and told him he would never talk to his mother that way again. He was so scared, he got quiet and hid behind his mom. I don;t care how mad she got at me it was worth it.

Here is the sort of horse shit our elected representatives are spewing:
Unemployment benefits are creating jobs faster than practically any other program, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Thursday.
Now exactly how is paying someone to sit on their ass better than paying them to work on some project that will actually add something to the economy? This Orwellian doublespeak from these people is absolutely insane. And the weirdest thing is that I believe Pelosi is actually starting to believe it.

They enable unemployment by making it an occupation.

Absolutely insane. My country has become an idiocracy.

Ahhhh yesssss,,,,, Idiocracy:
The years passed, mankind became stupider at a frightening rate. Some had high hopes the genetic engineering would correct this trend in evolution, but sadly the greatest minds and resources where focused on conquering hair loss and prolonging erections.
We're gonna take you back, to the year 1939 when Charlie Chaplin and his nazi regime enslaved Europe and tried to take over the world...
