Reno Airport Shuttle Bus?

Post by Minxy » Sun Jul 04, 2010 1:27 am

Does anyone here have any experiences with this? I did a search on here that wasn't helpful. I also clicked the links off the Burning Man website for Biotour and Biobus and neither of those looked like a shuttle bus website! :D

Does anyone know if there IS a shuttle bus to the airport? I'd appreciate any info. :)

There is no shuttle bus.

Biobus was the closest thing, but they got in trouble over permits/license to pick up at the airport/provide paid transportation. I've not heard of any plans to start up again.

If I make it I'll have to fly. People keep telling me it's easy to find a ride from the Reno airport to BRC...but I can't rely on the universe quite that much.

Thanks a bunch, guys. That's about what I surmised as well.

I guess I'll be driving the kid to the airport on Thurs or Friday after all. Ah, well, it was wishful thinking. :P

One of my camp-mates kindly offered to pock me up in Reno. There seemed to be a lot of Burners heading through when I arrived, and they had a table all set up.

Just head west and count on a bit of radical self reliance.

Yes, thanks Martini Steve. I saw that as well. :) It's a good idea, but I think I'll probably just drive her. It's a bit spendy for Air Advantage, although, considering the cost of driving my minivan to the playa and back and to Reno and back...hrm.

Sign her up for gate. Have her last shift be close to her departure time. Catch a ride with a staffer going to Reno to restock on manic panic, preparation H or some other DPW essentials.

Pizzamancer,
I believe you meant "pox me up." I would recommend it, especially if the pox in question is french.

It appeared to be seriously easy! The airport gives us a space with an info desk and a pretty big area to kick back right next to baggage claim. You could even wait for the next flight(s) of people coming in....Look for someone that doesn't personally give you the heebies and ask away. Trust me, you can spot the burners. The best is when the suits get off their plane and ask us about Burning Man. They are either intrigued or terrified. LOL!

Hehe, we are already working for Greeters most of the week. :P That is a good idea, though!

I'm guessing that mentally and financially, it will be less costly to just drive my minivan extra (we bring an RV) and drive her to Reno. That way I make sure she gets to the airport on time and safely and she won't stress out. The cost in gas is cheaper than Air Advantage. The cost in my time...meh. I haven't decided yet. :D I don't mind driving to the playa behind our RV (fiance will drive that) but leaving BM to run to Reno....YUCK! Oh well. The things I'll do for my kid...she owes me. Grumble.

I live in Reno and I was thinking of going out to the airport on Sunday night and just hanging out w/ a sign that says "need a ride to BRC?" or something like that. I have a big van, and I'm driving alone, caravanning w/ my camp.

I have a reputation in my camp of bringing strays home... this would just be another of those times :) I just really don't want to be alone in my van for 2.5 hours in the dark and I think having some interesting burner in the passenger seat will make the ride much more enjoyable, and I always could use help with gas money!

FWIW, I picked up a stray back in 2003 (or thereabouts) at what was then the MGM Grand (now Grand Sierra I believe). They had caught the free shuttle from the airport and had a big sign that simply read: HOME TO MAMA B.R.C. They said they had been out there about 2 minutes! So there is an idea that may help somehow.

From what I observed last year, it will take you less than 5 minutes to pick up a stray.
I wanted to grab a couple of people last year but we had just too much crap in the car for more people + stuff.

..and like Doc says the MGM/Bally's/Reno Hilton/Grand Sierra is also a good place for strays, along with Trader Joe's, Whole Foods and pretty much any of the Wally's.

I'd need somebody who can give me a ride, fit my stuff in their vehicle and will be stopping for sundries before our final destination.

Hey Split- no Von's in Reno. Maybe you're thinking of the Albertson's, wait no scratch that- used to Albertson's, now it's SaveMart on 80 and Keystone?

With stores and hotels (MGM/Ballys/Grand Sierra) constantly changing their names it can get confusing!

Split- yup, that's the one.. Savemart. And there's a Baskin Robbins in the same shopping center, you know, because ice cream is goooood before you head out for the desert. I'd say either there or the WalMart on west mccarran (one exit west off 80) would be a good place to find a ride.

CFM- hmm... I'm leaving monday morning and have one more spot in the van. (I've already picked up 2 strays) If your schedule works w/ that, send me an email. I've been so amused by your posts on eplaya that I think you'd be a blast in the van. Plus it'd be nice to have another female to balance out the chromosones in the van.

Bobzilla just posted this on Facecrack:

Since there is already some interest as to how to get to BRC from Reno via rideshare this year, I just thought I would go ahead and fill you all in as to where the 2010 Reno Rideshare Bases currently stands, with one or two things still in the works over the next week or two.

1) For the past 2 years there has been a few different locations in the Reno area that serve as Rideshare Bases, because of their popularity and proximity to the regular burner migrations to the playa.

These 3 locations served as Rideshare Bases last year and will do so again this year:

Save Mart Supermarket
525 Keystone Ave – 775-786-2150
Open 24/7.

Whole Foods Market
6139 South Virginia Street – 775-829-8666
Open Open 8am-9pm.

Trader Joe’s
5035 South McCarran Blvd – 775-826-1621
Open 8am-10pm.

The idea is, and experience has proven, that if you get to any of these locations during their regular business hours you should be able to negotiate a ride among the burners that are shopping there at any given time.

2) Last year there was a free shuttle that ferried burners from the airport to these 3 rideshare bases during 3 days during Burning Man. An invaluable service, but it remains to be seen if there is going to be a similar service this year. Whether there will be such a service, or not, will be found within a few weeks and I'll be sure to post it here and beyond.

3) Regardless if there will be a shuttle or not, if you are at the airport and are looking to get to one of the rideshare bases, getting to one of them is not a major obstacle. Here are some suggestions:

Air Playa Info, a service c/o Burning Man volunteers, will be inside the airport near Baggage Claim sharing various kinds of information about local resources and beyond. It is recommended that you stop by Air Playa Info to see if there are other burners looking to rideshare, and/or if there is anyone with a rental car that either can take you to the playa or at least to one of the rideshare bases. The surest option though is to share a taxi with others to get to one of the rideshare bases. All 3 rideshare bases are next to a freeway -- Trader Joe's and Whole Foods are next to US-395, Save Mart is next to I-80 -- and are only about 5-10 minutes away via the freeway. Should cost around $10 (but be sure to remember to tell the taxi driver to get to the location via the freeway :-). Just remember that Trader Joe's and Whole Foods are not ideal locations to go to beyond 8-9pm, while Save Mart is open 24 hours (and is the single-most busiest spot in Reno during Burning Man).

4) Having said all this, if you do go to any of the Rideshare Bases, please remember that the parking lot is not just for burners, to Leave No Trace, that everyone in the vehicle must be wearing a seatbelt, and to be comfortable with those in the vehicle before hopping on-board.

Again, this is where the Reno Rideshare Bases program currently stands, I'll be sure to update it within a few weeks.

Awesome...so I could just get a cab from the airport to one of those places, do my shopping, and hope to get a ride from there. Finally get to see what all the TJ fuss is about.

Gah, I hate the idea not having actual plans. I know it works out for so many and is the best stories of their lives, but that flat-out is not how my life goes. Quite the gd effing opposite.

I'm going to keep all that info handy.

The Walmart and Winco in Sparks are jammed with people grabbing last minutes as well. I saw the green bus hanging out there for a while last year.
I know I'd be hella nervous if I didn't have something set-up also, but really don't think you'll have a problem catching a ride...but, if you can't find a ride you spend can a week at the luxurious Reno casinos....
What other people think about you is none of your business.
