Hi, all - I'm Heather, and really looking forward to my 5th trip to the playa. My last visit home was in 2007, so I've been missing the dust!
Quick question - my camp didn't get a placement this year (boo!) and we are trying to figure out the best way to let our campmates know where the first-arrivers set up our camp.
What is the best way to easily let people know where to find you BEFORE THEY HAVE PARKED? Is there an announcement board near the greeter's station that someone can bike back to and put a note on? I know there is a message board at center camp, but it seems inefficient to have people drive into center camp to look for the note, and then drive to where we are camped.
I've heard rumors of cellphone coverage this year... any info?
Thanks!

The bulliten board is at Playa Info, center camp. They also have computers on which you can enter that information.
I wouldn't rely on cell phone coverage. It's a system made for dozens of users, not thousands.
Have some useful marker(s) packed by the first setters so that late arrivals can be looking for them. and asking about them. (The only place where "Have you seen a giant pink elephant" is not a prying question.) Agree on a general area to look for space. And the advance party should probably do the paper plate arrows with name of camp on them thing.

There's not an announcement board at Greeter's Station. The only one I know of is at Center Camp Playa Information...that requires someone to go there an post your camp info...and then the people who need the info have to go there to retrieve it.
My camp is faced with the same issue. We have a general idea of where we're going to be (F-G/8:00 - 8:30). One of our camp de facto organizers will go to that area and stake our claim. As the rest of us come in we'll drive to the general area, get out of our vehicles and walk around asking of the whereabouts of our camp until we zero in on it. It works quite well.

Don't bore your friends with all your troubles. Tell your enemies instead, for they will delight in hearing about them.
