How Early Can I Get In?

Post by Katka » Tue Jul 06, 2010 6:49 pm

This year will be my first time having the whole week from Monday on. We are all excited to get there as early as possible, and I was wondering what its like to pile outside the gates the day before. Realistically, what time does everything open up? And is it cool to just post up on the road until then on Sunday?

(Found by searching for Sunday arrival, by the way.

Gates open at midnight Sunday night.

No it is not cool to arrive earlier and jam up the road. The Nevada Highway Patrol will vulgarize you, confiscate all your drugs and take you to jail in Lovelock.

Anyone that reaches the BM gate before midnight is sent to lot D where they are held untill at least Monday morning before being allowed in.

Thems the rules babe.

Really? I thought it went from 23:59 straight to the stroke of midnight.

Is there a stroke of morning for the following day?

Not joking here, I had to learn a new alphabet and language when I came here.

"midnight" is a term, not a real time.

12:00 a.m. is still 12:00 a.m., even if the chickens are asleep.

I think that is why you so often see it as 12:01 am Monday.
I'm always worried about that "leap minute" but my watch isn't accurate enough for me to actually care.

Anyway, if you don't have an early entry pass, you don't get in before 12:01 AM Monday.

This is a serious issue for many companies and for the military. I was in the Air Force, and all actions that would have happened at midnight were scheduled for 0001 (one minute past midnight) because of the confusion over what is 2400 and what is 0000 - which day/date applies at exactly midnight? (Military time is on Zulu, of course, and the statement of time includes the date and year.)

Having the gates open at 12:01 AM Monday, as fishy says, is the answer to a reasonable belief that midnight Sunday occurs right after 11:59PM Saturday.

The other issue is that there is no AM or PM associated with 12:00 whether the chickens are asleep or not. AM and PM mean antemeridian and postmeridian. Before meridian means before noon, so 12:00N cannot be AM or PM. Same with midnight - is it 12 before noon or 12 after noon? And the answer is yes. So you have 12:00 noon and 12:00 midnight, but there are no 12:00 AM and 12:00 PM. This is ignored by virtually everyone with no harmful results, but it has gotten a few people out of parking tickets when they parked at a sign that said no parking before 12:00 PM. Courts have held that there's no reasonable notice what time is meant.

I've always thot that the D-Lot made a lot of sense for those showing up early. It takes a lot of pressure off of the approach towns, and gets folks off the road.

We come down from Cedarville and have seen vehicles pulled over to the side with portions of the rigs sticking out in the road way, or vehicles ahead slamming on their brakes to pull over at the last second (drivers can't see pull-outs in the dark until they're right on top of them).

From a safety perspective I think the D-Lot serves a great purpose, but the word's the word...don't come early...clog up Gerlach and Empire, and jam up the highway instead.
Don't bore your friends with all your troubles. Tell your enemies instead, for they will delight in hearing about them.

Really? There is no 2400 in military time, it goes from 2359.59 to 0000.00. And from 11:59:59 PM to 12:00:00 AM; 11:59:59 AM to 12:00:00 PM. 12:00 AM is midnight, 12:00 PM is noon. Seems pretty simple to me, though I've had to do computer programs to interpret these, that was hard (actually harder concept to code was that you went from 12:59 to 1:00).

Cheapo digital clocks that switch am and pm incorrectly, if cheaply, seem to have caused the problem.
Not that many ever got it anyway.

At least by fcc rules, 12:00 is a zero point, therefore the next division only starts after it.
12:00:00 is 12 pm at midnight.
12:00:01 is am, starting the new cycle.

Crappy digital clocks notwithstanding.

I correct myself. As an engineer, that's how cut and dried I expect it to be but apparently it isn't:

I must disagree... spending money in those small towns helps them pay for increased infrasctructure, highway maitenence, etc, and makes them more amenable to putting up with the traffic.

Last year, if you showed up early, they let everyone who got there at midnight in first, then waited another couple hours before they started letting D-lot people in the gate. So you are in for a looonnng wait with only a couple porta-potties.

Of course, don't stop on the side of the highway. I agree there.

3-mile is not part of the closure. You can go there and drive onto the playa and wait.

I'm a habitual midnight roller and have it down to a science, so that we lierally roll onto the playa within 10 minutes of 12 midnight.

Might actually get in early though. It could be!

Sure, you could pull off at the 3 mile exit and pull onto the East Playa Road ... The only legal entrance into BRC is off the 8 mile exit. The closure area surrounds the city. The LE would be happy to ticket anyone who wanders into the closure area.

The entrance to the city is fenced from the highway to the city gates, so there is no way to get into line except from the highway...

I look at D-lot as "the penalty box for eager-beavers" ;)

My opinion is not fact... Experience could vary, user beware (caution - contents are Snarky), etc ...

Or if you get there on Saturday, buy a camping permit for Pyramid lake and spend a day lakeside. Sunday night pack up and join all the other good burners on 447.

They closed one site due to graffiti and vandalism. Not the whole lake.

You can purchase and print permits online.
