Sky Lanterns - LNT or Fire issues?

Post by kmatthews812 » Mon Jul 12, 2010 10:53 am

I was thinking about bringing some sky lanterns to launch of during BM this year. Here is a link with what they look like:

http://www.wholesaleskylanterns.com/

My question is, would I be breaking any BM etiquette by launching them off? It seems like it could be a fire hazard if it lands somewhere on fire far away, or could possibly be an issue with leaving a trace.

Thoughts?

They look cool! but moopy and a fire hazard. I'd give that a "no"

You're flying them over a tent city. Far away? How would you feel if one landed on a tent with someone inside sleeping? You cannot control them or where they land.

A definite no. I saw them out there my first year, and even as a newb, I knew they were a bad idea.

Besides, they don't work well at higher altitudes.

...and if for somereason they did make it to one of the ranges, that would be an instant brush fire, not to mention all of the Bambi slayers you'd seriously piss off (I believe that week is also the opening of deer season). My boss was on the other side of the eastern range last year and could see the BM glow. In his words.."The f'n hippies scared away all the deer"

If ya wanna watch hippys climbing out of thier tents in the middle of the night and trying to put out fires with thier camelbacks, my suggestion
is to use roman candles.
That way you get to record it on your handcam because it's not so far away.

I went to the web site and clicked on "Sky lantern safety". That got me "Coming soon". Safety Second, I guess!

Looks to be paper bag hot air baloons.

A year after the tsunami there was a photo of sky lanterns being set free somewhere in Thailand. Over the ocean. Even as a web photo, it was gorgeous.

I wouldn't mind seeing that once in my life. I'd not pick it over the northern lights, but it's above, hm, I can't say brain surgery, because that's not a good thing...

I'll think about it...

Drifting is natural when applying these flaming paper bag ballons into the prevailing trade winds.

Didn't the Chinese use these things a weapons before they figured out better things to toss at thier enemies ?
