Internet at Burningman?

Post by bamboohead » Mon Jul 12, 2010 6:36 pm

is anyone going to be setting up an internet connection at buringman this year? part of me thinks it's sacreligious.... but my girlfriend absolutly must be online on the 30th for internet college classes.... i don't have a satellite to drag with me or i would be the one providing...

i am a network engineer for the last 10 years, if anyone is planning on bringing a connection i would be happy to provide my services to get it online...

This affects my plans for the week pretty seriously, if anyone knows who i should be talking to about this, please, let me know.

I seem to recall there is a group that has a satellite dish and offers wifi, but that it's really only functional during vanguard for the early build crew, because as soon as 30k+ people arrive and try to hop online to check their mail it pretty much croaks for all practical purposes.

I would NOT count on reliable internet access on the playa.

Perhaps the best thing for your girlfriend would be to stay somewhere in a nearby town on the 30th and come in after her classes are finished?

Apparently, 4 am is the best time to get on-line.

Here, let me research all this for you:

http://playaevents.burningman.com/
Network Information

A few things to keep in mind if you are accesing the public network here in BRC. It is an open, unsecured network.

We've got a 'short tube'. The 10Mbps is shared by the entire Black Rock City. This includes Emergency Services and all the other BRC departments. Please limit high bandwidth use. Traffic shaping is in effect, (or QoS for the geeks) and use of the network is prioritized by need.

Public internet is brought to you by a dedicated team of geeky volunteers, and is not supported by Burning Man. This is a 'best-effort' service. Don't panic if you can't login to your favorite social network, there's the whole city waiting for you to explore it!
So, there is some kind of gizmo running there afterall.

But don't get your hopes up. Best bet is the following, in order:

1. Leave her home.

2. Don't leave that delux motel in Reno till she's done.

3. If you are already there, pay the reentry fee at the gate and drive out to Gerlach, log into the WiFi at the BM office (no guarantee this will work)

4. If you are already there, go out to the DPW Depot, they have their own WiFi that is not reachable from the BRC proper. If the DPW crew don't chase you off you may get lucky. Or they might be streaming porn and you end up SOL.

5. Try the WiFi near center camp (yeah, like thats ever gonna happen). Pray, do it at 4am as suggested and sacrifice a goat.

6. Get her drunk! Slip her a ruffi! Get her high! Whatever it takes to get her to miss the damn thing.

Good Luck.

7. Have someone else do whatever it is on the Internet for her.
