Vinyl care on the playa
I know this has been probably posted a thousand times, but what are some peoples suggestions experiences on keeping your vinyl clean or proper ways to clean them, during/after the event. I brought them out last year and didnt destroy them which is good but i know theres some knowledge out there on this.
and we got there laughing...
Mikey,
I've heard that one of those electrostatic gun-shaped thingies is a good thing to bring along. Because the playa dust particles actually have a significant ionic charge associated with them you can zap them and remove dust more readily with whatever cleaner you use for your records.
I don't know this first hand though.

While I rarely make shameless plugs I use a product called 303 Aerospace Protectant. This product works well for me for a couple of reasons. It protects against UV damage, it neutralizes the static that attracts dust in the first place, and it leaves a reasonable shine....but unlike Armor All it doesn't flake off.
I use 303 AP on my kayaks to protect them against UV damage and a aerosol fabric version on some of my stunt kites. And when it comes to the playa, I have a black Ford Ranger....and with a black interior I knew I was a sitting duck for having playa dust show up for months. I went over everything with 303 spray and while I still had dust, I was able to clean it up in a day. My other truck in 02 never did get all the dust out, when I traded it in the detail shop asked where in the sam hell did I take the truck? It was bad.
Here in KC many of the autoparts stores are carrying 303's product line, and you can order it through West Marine online. They have a website if you search for 303 Products and want to know more. It's a good product....and it does work as advertised.

Well...you might be right. But why not go with Stanton's Final Scratch and leave the vinyl at home? If the playa dust doesn't get you, the heat will...or unfortunately the thieves, or someone gets drunk and trips over your boxes...no thanks. With Final Scratch you bypass 95% of the hassle.
But if anyone has a need for a good UV protectant product....303 is worth a look. The spray also works great on flight bags, carrying cases....it might help combat the dust.

As a dj born in raised in AZ this is my advice. Bring your flight case. Keep your flightcase packed tight. Do not open your flight case until you are sure it has cooled down. Final Scratch although a great tool means bringing a laptop. A laptop and fine dust could spell disaster. Also Final scratch has two special made vinyl records that control the MP3's if either of these gets damaged on the Playa then your spinning is done for the rest of your time. I think the key to vinyl in a desert climate is keeping your records in a flight case and packing it tight. I have many records that should have been warped some time ago but I have been able to keep them safe.Tancorix wrote:Well...you might be right. I've caried 2 cases of vinyl out to the playa.
Heat isn't much of a problem, as long as it's not direct sunlight.
a tight packed flightcase is indeed a good solution.
dust is much worse of a problem, but nothing a good dust cleaner can't wipe.
Go vinyl playa.
P.S. anyone ned a techno DJ this year???

CD is only logical choice
I'm pretty committed to not bringing vinyl...If I'm flying to Reno it just doesn't make sense anyway. Almost everyone has CD players in there rigs anyway, right?
I hope...
