Survivors handbook vcove to cover and then go
Hello Karmen, and welcome to the E-playa forum.
One of the first "rules" of the Burning Man Art Festival is "radical self reliance".
So I suggest you start by performing an excercise in self reliance. Go to the main web site and find the first-timer information. Read the Survival Guide. And read a bunch of old posts on this forum -- until you find something that fits your interests.
By then, you will be well started.

Sorry, the post title was awesome!
There is a one day quarantine for everyone arriving from OC. They check vaccinations, do a quick California Mental Maturity exam and then assign you to a life coach to guide you through the burn.
Just cut past the line via the right lane and go to the valet. They'll take care of it from there.

Just hire some deprogrammers to kidnap you for a couple of years, and then you'll be human...
Okay, that was a bit snarky. And you're not helped by the last people on this board to say they were from Orange. On the other hand, Kim STanley Robinson is also from Orange County, and he makes an excellent northern californian.
Anyway, yeah, read around, see what you like and then start asking more specific questions about that. Think about why you're going: fire, dancing, art, curiousity and see where that leads you. And keep going. Geep koing?

Welcome Karmen I'm from Orange Co. also.
I live by CSUF. My first tip is never say you're from Orange Co. My second tip is never claim to be a hippie. With those two tips you should do well on the forum.
As a 1st time burner myself, I'd say read the survivors and first timers guides and pay attention. But I'd also ask yourself two questions: Can you afford to go? Can you spare the time to go? It's those two questions that kept me away for years. I think they are the first things one should think of.
oh, and I'm a hippie

Okay, I "live" in Orange County, but I'm not "from" Orange County. I grew up in Oregon. On a farm. In a dinky little town, pop. 580.
Furthermore, I only live in Orange County because I am being held hostage there. I am unable to leave for circumstances beyond my control.
I don't really like Orange County.
Orange County and I are barely on speaking terms.
I tolerate Orange County but talk shit behind Orange County's back.
Orange County is easily duped into bed.
I slept with Orange County and when we were finished I put my cigarette out on Orange County's ass.
Does this make a difference?

As a born and raised Orange Countian who escaped with her life....that was the funniest thing I've read all day.peacefulhuman wrote: I slept with Orange County and when we were finished I put my cigarette out on Orange County's ass.

Sorry you're being held hostage.
Finally moving to SF...can't WAIT!
Hi, my name is Token and I used to live and work in Orange County.
It has been five years since I last crossed the Orange Curtain!
In 2001 I took a job in Laguna Hills, where old republicans go to die. I lived in Irvine for 6 months.
As soon as my lease expired I moved to Downtown Los Angeles and drove 62 miles to my work, each way, 5 days a week, through the most hideous traffic on this planet, for four years.
It was worth it.

At least in the 80's there were Oingo Boingo shows at Irvine Meadows...mudpuppy000 wrote:I escaped from behind the orange curtain in 97, if you think it's bad now imagine growing up there in the 80's.
I should point out: I moved to Orange County in 1990 by choice. The PREVIOUS four years were spent in... (wait for it) THE NINE-OH-NINE! So the OC was sort of a step up.
Sort of.
After four years of Orangina, I was poised to flee -- and then she got her hooks in me. First came love. Then came marriage. Then came babies in their respective carriages.
Then came the hostage situation.
Technically, I'm free of the captor, but I remain here para los ninos.
I look at those of you who got out much like I imagine dogs in the pound look at the dogs who are released to go home with new owners. I just hope there's no euthanasia in my future - at least not until I get to experience my first burn.
