thanks mang! yeah, i just took the teas test and passed, so i'm in officially, but now they tell me i might be in the spring 2011 semester of the program...so i might still be able to go to burnin mang! but as far as biking there goes, i'm on the fence...i probably won't do it, just to appease you guys... but i do indeed have a camp that is supporting me and i have a trailer that i attach to my bike, which can carry the necessities i need(truthfully i can bring in 78.54% of what i need on that) i'm just having my friends bring a little bit of extra water/food. i've done some extensive bike touring before, and on the east coast...new jersey..blegh..some of the worst and most packed roads/highways with no shoulder...so i'd be used to it. and i wouldn't ride during peak time! hell no! i was thinking, if i do it, going early as fuck sunday morning/saturday night and just watching for headlights and pulling off the road.

BTW, I drive with a clean CDL in my backpocket (17 years, no ticket)and I have a LOT more experience handling a large overweight vehicle than most here and the situation that I described would not get me charges higher than a "driving too fast" ticket if I even were to get that, and prolly no manslaughter charge would even happen even if you were to die, since your death would have just been a matter of being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
And once again , I would have to choose hitting you over having a head on with someone else, and possibly killing myself, my girlfriend, and everyone else in the other vehicle heading my way.
You are really dumb if you can't see the logic in that statement, sure I might feel bad for a while if I killed you, but I would never forgive myself for making the decision to not hit some stupid biker was why I no longer have my loved one at my side.
Not to mention the people in the other car.
I drive 50-55 miles and hour tops on that road and all those other dumbasses that I was warning you about(your real risk) don't, in fact they are the ones passing me so they can arrive 20 minutes earlier than me at the gate. And also they are the one's that would more than likely hit you because of thier poor driving habits.
And once again, none of this matters, since you aren't going anyhow, right ?

I never toss propane cans into bonfires(unless I wanna shoot them) and the only reson my panties get bunched up is because I haven't washed them in a week or so, so I guess you can't be talking about me.

I recently saved the life of a biker.
On a rural unlit divided four lane, he pulled up and hovered about four feet from my rear bumper, completely blinding me.
Since I couldn't see a fucking thing, I had to wait for a good gap from the car beside me and he wouldn't back off an inch.
As I pulled to the right, he cut over and passed me illegally on the right.
If I had snapped over, as I normally would, he would have highsided off a steep dropoff into trees.
With a passenger.
The only reason I didn't, was the suspicion he was an even bigger moron than he seemed already.
I hope his passenger beat the crap out of him/her.

Cars are often over prosecuted in bike accidents.
I wonder if he would have even been charged for murdering his passenger, should he have survived?
He probably had two feet of pavement as he cleared my front end.
Yes, he was so stupid, he continued trying to pass on the right.

But he won't be around long, and I just hope he doesn't take anyone else along with him.

If I had been in error and hit him, it wouldn't have changed the results one bit.

I'm very conscious of what even black powder can do with a projectile.

I've seen the photos of bombing aftermaths, and the only thing that is worse are bike crashes.
In high speed photography, a body actually dissolves in a strong enough shock wave, like a sand painting in the wind.
With the mass involved in crashes, you can get the same effect, only mass instead of speed.

You should take the risks you want.
But you should remember what you're risking.
Maybe take a look at some videos and photos of the helmets embedded in truck grills, or the three mile long crash sites the canyon carvers leave sometimes, in spite of kevlar/titanium body armor.

And if you feel just as confident, go for it.

Actually I think anyone behind the wheel should face the same reality.
But cagers have at least some chance in an accident.

This is actually cost effective and I have the support of highway engineers.

I've done the drive on the 447 4 times and not once did it look like a very dangerous ride for a cyclist during the day in clear conditions. Way less dangerous then a windy mountain road. Or riding in heavy fog or at night. The lesson here is that the other posters on this thread have never driven at night, or in fog or on narrow windy mountain roads. They think that anything narrower then 6 lanes is dangerous. Its the inattentive, arrogant drivers that are dangerous.

They do that in LA, and in some metro areas in Europe - works well. Usually it seperates vehicles w/ trailers and motorhomes, etc, into the truck lanes (via the use of "Autos Only" lanes)...

Too bad there's not enough in the Nevada Highway Budget to upgrade/widen/etc. the 447 corridor, since most of the year it is a lightly travelled route, the only really heavy traffic revolves the weeks around the BRC event. (Maybe we can get Bruno to expand Bruno's, make it THE hotspot destination of NW Nevada...)

Still, incidents happen - either someone going onto the soft shoulder, losing control, and going into a roll... or incidents involving the huge trucks that fly the route from Empire south... and the infrequent head-ons.

At least it's better than it was before - I remember when 447 was pretty atrocious. But putting wider shoulders, both on 447 and 34, would be great... if and when the funding comes thru. Sadly, until Bruno expands the Casino, it's not likely to happen.

There was also talk a long time ago about a spur across the mountain from Susanville... of course, the same probblem happened - not enough traffic volume to make it worthwile. Plus that's a huge hill - would be really 'spensive to punch it thru.

Funny, the OP has since posted he was not doing BRC this year, which makes this all moot. ;)

Some of the people on eplaya have a fair amount of driving experience.

I have driven on mountain roads so narrow and twisted that any articulated vehicle would be forced to use both lanes.
These are the areas in the east that the interstate carefully avoids.
You can drive for an impressive distance on the same ridge.
I drove all night on a road like this in fog so heavy I was driving by the center stripe visible out the open door.
I never found a place to stop.
Fortunately I never saw another car, but every curve I expected a truck.

And that was a state road.
There are worse roads, including one lanes that at times are unpaved.
I sank directly into a road once to the bumpers and had to be removed by tractor.
The ruts were so deep that when the road deteriorated, I couldn't turn around.

I always try to travel with fog lamps now, and I think they saved my life a couple of times.
And of course I refer to real fog lamps, not the useless extra lamps on many cars now.

1) it is not illegal to ride on a state route in Nevada. See
NRS 484.503 Traffic laws apply to person riding bicycle.
Every person riding a bicycle upon a roadway has all of the rights and is subject to all of the duties applicable to the driver of a vehicle except as otherwise provided in NRS 484.504 to 484.513, inclusive, and except as to those provisions of this chapter which by their nature can have no application. (FYI, exceptions .504 refer to peace officers and .513 relates to proper reflectors and lamps)

2) dickie's comment essentially was that he would run the guy over, so as caring and warm as perhaps he is in person, he sure sounds like...well a dick in his online persona....

So easy to just say, "Hey, its dangerous on 447, there's no border, lot of heavy loads, etc.)" That would be helpful. Saying "If there is a bicycle person blocking the lane and I have to make a choice between having a head-on collision with a vehicle or hitting said bicycle, well... the choice is easy" is not so helpful.... Also, quite illegal according to Nevada Law. If its not safe to overpass a bike, you have to just wait til it is..... That is the law... Even a cop in LemmonValley Nv with two north bound lanes open, traveling at a high rate of speed with no lights or sirens in the right hand lane, accidentally hits the back tire of a bicyclist and guess what...KILLS HIM!!!!! Monday July 5th 2010. RIP Kevin Albertson age barely 21 on his way home from work.He was helping his mom keep the foreclosure away.

So Im sure alot of what most of us burners are trying to do is save this kids life.

But when you get emotionally charged.....
