BBQ in Reno

This thread is similar to the last meal before BRC thread a few weeks ago.

Specifically I'm trying to find recomendations for a good BBQ restaurant within 30min drive of reno.

Basically I've been watching too much 'Man v Food' online and I want ribs, brisket & a pulled pork sandwich

You can't really get BBQ in Ireland.

I've looked on Google but haven't really found what I'm looking for.

Any recomendations would be appreciated

don't you still do "Wicker man" in Ireland? Seems there'd be plenty of "long pork BBQ" there..........

Leave the event Saturday after the burn and go to Reno's Barbeque Cook-Off.

Depending on what day you plan on leaving BRC, you might be in luck. Reno hosts the Best in the West Rib cookoff every year.(they have all kinds of bbq, not just ribs) I believe Monday (exodus) is the last day and it usually wraps up by 4pm.

I'm also interested in this.

Every year I miss the big Rib Cook Off that ends on Monday in Sparks at the Nugget.

There is only one local company from Sparks that has top honors but they only do catering, rubs and sauce.

Token, are you talking about BJ's? They have a restaraunt in Sparks. It's been there for years!

Since Sparks has hosted the rib cookoff, we've had a ton of mom & pop bbq places pop up around town. I personally like BJ's the best, they've been around forever, however there are a bunch of different ones that claim different styles (ie, Carolina style BBQ, Oakland style BBQ, etc.)

Theres Locals bbq in Carson City, good "mom and pop" type place, across Carson St (395) from Fandaingos casino....same parking lot as Ihop
We've been to the bbq joint on the NW corner of Wells Ave at Roberts, a few times...can't remember the name though.

I don't know what it is, but there are some semi-famous barbeque places, Everett and Jones, for instance, and Flint's--when it's in business. YOu gotta remember that there's a lot of foodies in Berkeley and San Francisco, as well as in Oakland, and that a big chunk of the Oakland population is African American.

Flints is the bomb, nevermind Everett and Jones. Oakland style is with 2 slices of white bread and a scoop of potato salad. Gotta pack in those carbs with all that meat :-) Kinda like "2 scoop rice" in Hawaii.

Man, I going to have to cut out on Sunday and check this out. It was just meant to be.

Oakland style refers to the use of the wood used in the smoker. Traditional Texas BBQ is smoked over mesquite, pecan or hickory, KC style typically uses oak, etc...

Oakland style uses fruit wood, apple and cherry are the prevalent selections and is uses the Memphis and KC style of thick, molasses based sweet BBQ sauce slathered on deep.

Kinder's is another good one in town although they are CA chain. They've won the rib cookoff a couple of times. They sell their ball roasts at Costco now that are nom, nom! Might have to bring one to BM.

I know, WTF is a ball roast? LOL.

I knew that there was a rib cookoff the week of BM, I just didn't think about going to it on Labour Day. We'll see how we feel after we've cleaned the car and what not. We were planning on heading down to Tahoe for the day but I might try and convince them otherwise.

BJ's looks exactly like what I want. I'm looking forward to eating too much, having a heart attack and missing the burn. Nice!

BBQ House is pretty damn good Oakland Style barbeque. It is on South Wells at Roberts. Take the Wells exit from I-80 it is a block or two past the viaduct.

Oakland Style bbq... I like the idea of the smoking with fruit wood.
In KC we generally smoke with Mesquite and maybe a bit of Hickory as well.
I love me some Q so I might hit one or two of those places while in the area. We get in early on Sunday and leave on Labor Day so I think we have time...

BBQ House on Wells at Roberts or Coach's BBQ (formerly another BBQ House/BBQ House affiliate) just off I-80 at Wells, a couple blocks North are AWESOME. Their HOT sauce is to die for, and they have an incredible selection of the most authentic sides. My mouth is watering just thinking about it.

If you're from Ireland, in my experience, I would order everything Mild and get sides of the Medium and Hot as it's a whole different level of spicy than I found over there.

Don't worry I like my heat

The only thing I can't eat is Atomic Hot Sause, it burns my mouth to pieces.

I lived in the bay area for a while (never got BBQ for some reason) so I'm acclimatized.

But your right, over here spicy doesn't taste any different than mild in most places
