Hello kast/Brian
!!! Sounds like you are ready to make your voyage! I remember the day before I left for my first time--was driving in town and it felt very surreal, slow motion the thought of the journey was going to embark on...a slow steady smile crept onto my face as I saw folks walking around doing default tasks (going into the bank, watering lawns, etc.) and thought "wow...I'm d i s s a p p e a r i n g..."

Welcome, just wait till the day you actually leave for the playa it's enough to give a guy the "bubble guts."
My first burn it finally dawned on me what I was getting myself into when somewhere above sacramento on I-80 some dude in a plain assed moving truck stared over at me, struck his lighter and just leaned back and kept on driving... that's when I knew I was among friends.
Let the excitement begin!! As a memorable quote from preburn eplaya last year said," It's time to get weird!"

Sooner or later, it will get real strange...

Yeah, a lot of people get evacuated off playa with severe snark deficiencies...teardropper wrote:Remember, ePlaya is not the playa.kast wrote: healthy doses of snark

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone, glad to be a little bit closer to home!
theCryptofishist: Will do, so far, I recall reading about taping all the various holes shut, with bedsheets wrapping everything on the inside of the van to facilitate easier clean-up.
CLARKcon: Can't wait to have that feeling!
ygmir: Seems to be that way, thanks!
jkish: Hey there, thanks for the welcome to eplaya!
Jackass: Yeah, I'm not quite sure if I've had that moment yet. However, it definitely felt great once I finally got past the hurdle of, "ok, I'm going this year and nothing in this universe will stop me."
bm_cricket: Dusty.. on the playa? Uhh.. no one told me there'd be dust. I may have to reconsider my plans.
pinemom: Better to be prepared than unprepared, I think. To reduce the amount of things that I'll inevitably be unprepared for.
teardropper: Point noted. I gotta admit that I was disheartened to read about a few people that had had their gear and themselves left in the desert. I imagine there's another side to those stories, but it kinda reinforced the idea that I need to be able to survive entirely on my own for a week (transportation, shelter, food, and getting myself out there/back home safely).

HEY! Welcome! And congratulations on coming to this decision on your own, in your time! That's such a fabulous way to begin the journey.
I have a giant piece of advise. Rent a cargo van in Long Beach or LA from Enterprise. Tell them you are going to NV and CA. You will get JUSt enough miles to carry you to the playa and back. Sleep in the cargo van (mine staid cool all day and was awesome). Don't bother with a tent. Bring a personal shade, some chairs, food, clothes, and you're ready to go.
Have a wonderful time this year. And do me a favor and remember something!!! Don't over extend yourself. Remember, you can come home again next year if you so choose. Don't push yourself so hard and so far that you end up in medical, dehydrated, or so burnt out by mid-week, you wont even have the energy to get yourself through.
Welcome home.

Finally moving to SF...can't WAIT!
kast, I was 26 at my first burn too! You will know so much more about it than I did, going in. I think your attitude of wanting to do it all yourself is commendable, advisable, and--for you--feasible. There is something quite nice about being the captain of your own ship.
After 8 years of thinking and reading about the event it will feel oddly familiar to you in a way I'm trying to imagine vicariously, just for the fun of it . . . but I'm also pretty sure it could still blow your mind.
