From the Biking to the Burn thread, a post from Bay Bridge Sue which I think belongs better in this discussion than a bike thread:
Thanks guys for giving me the virtual shade and water on my virtual "hit the wall" mid-week crash.
How far to take enforcement and active moderation has been asked at the admin level. I don't imagine anyone will have time for the debate until after the event. In the meantime, I am going to go with hands off. Apparently the community can respond quite capably.I was one of the attacked, AntiM. I was, as they say, offended. And it IS within the rights of a moderator to delete offensive posts, etc.
The TOS:
Section 6:
"Additionally, you hereby grant Burning Man a world-wide, irrevocable license to use, distribute, reproduce, modify, adapt, publicly perform and publicly display content you submit or make available for inclusion on the Service solely for the purposes of providing the Content submitted on the Service."
7a: You understand and agree that Burning Man may review and delete any content, messages, photos or profiles (collectively, "Content") that in the sole judgment of Burning Man violate this Agreement or which might be offensive, illegal, or that might violate the rights, harm, or threaten the safety of Members.
7e: The following is a partial list of the kind of Content that is illegal or prohibited on the Eplaya. Burning Man reserves the right to investigate and take appropriate legal action in its sole discretion against anyone who violates this provision, including without limitation, removing the offending post from the Service and terminating the membership of such violators, in connection with all available civil, criminal, and injunctive remedies. You agree not to use the Service to:
(1) post, email, transmit or otherwise make available any Content that is unlawful, harmful, threatening, abusive, harassing, tortious, defamatory, vulgar, obscene, libelous, invasive of another's privacy, hateful, or racially, ethnically or otherwise objectionable;
I could also draw attention to sections 13, 15, and 17.
AntiM was well within her rights to do what she did, and she needed not apologize. These are not guidelines, these are the TOS everyone agrees to. As a moderator, AmtiM (and the rest of the mod team) are Burning Man. Guidelines are guidelines, the TOS is the contract running the show explaning the users rights. Personally I think that she's being awfuly nice... I would not be so. Nor have I in the past when such things happened.
Have a nice day.
Thanks guys for giving me the virtual shade and water on my virtual "hit the wall" mid-week crash.

I'm glad you didn't but it wouldn't have been the end of the world if you had.I was poised to delete Isotopia's post, but I went back and carefully reread the Community Guidelines.
I've certainly been guilty of more egregious posts.
My post to Epic was not an attack. Insulting perhaps, but not an attack. Referring to him as a 'smarmy, sanctimonious little hypocrite' which, I maintain he remains, was a statement of fact.
An elaboration of the obvious.
There is no calumny at all in my statement. Suggesting by implication that he (i.e. the 'us' in his flawed logic) is somehow not a consumer of petroleum products (direct or otherwise) is ridiculously flawed and incorrect. Believing as much is as delusionally self-flattering as it is hypocritical.
He was wrong. I called him on it.
BTW AntiM, classy response even though I believe you owe no explanation or justification to anyone here for your decision to accept a gift ticket.

I'm sorry that I mentioned the gift ticket. Apart from the fact that my information was incomplete, it's becoming a bigger deal than it should be, maybe. It most certainly is among this threads minor details.

No worries from me. I went into detail for transparency. No one should really care.theCryptofishist wrote:I'm sorry that I mentioned the gift ticket. From the history of moderation, and threads I need to reread as a moderator again and again so I do not forget:
http://eplaya.burningman.org/viewtopic.php?t=8306
http://eplaya.burningman.org/viewtopic.php?t=16114
http://eplaya.burningman.org/viewtopic.php?t=11585
There's more, so much more. I had forgotten what it used to be like. I'd like to thank those who have chosen to hang in there, and thanks to the many fine newbs who have stepped up and contributed so very much. And the newbs who are now regulars.
BTW, many of the players have moved on into virtual sunsets so replying to those threads may not be the most useful endeavour.
