First timer coming over from London, UK going it alone!

Post by esselle » Tue Jul 20, 2010 12:46 pm

Hello!

My names Nik and I'm heading over on my own..

Done a fair bit of research and am a festival veteran, although fully aware this ones on the next level..

I have however left this fairly late to organise..

I need to hire an RV and SF is my preferred location to hire it from. I know now isn't the best time to start looking and SF isn't the best place to try and hire from.

So with that in mind can anyone fire over some good suggestions of where to look that isn't going to cost upwards of $1500?

Any other tips in general would be handy ie where to park up/camp, what to look out for, to do etc..

Thanks all!

:)

I suggest you spend some time in the "Tips and Tricks, Questions and Answers" forum, that has a lot of discussion on these topics.
Remember that the festival ends on a three day weekend (more or less what the british call a "bank holiday" I think) and that rvs are scarce. Also, be sure and clean that puppy thoroughly before returning. Otherwise you're shitting where the rest of us are eating.

honestly man, forget renting an RV on your own.. sign up to a theme camp like minitropolis and use all their facilities, have private showers, toilets, kitchens, shade structures, bar, communal area

if youre on your own then a theme camp is most definitely the way to go

even if you did eventually find an RV, youre going to get raped on the cost and then youre going to most likely lose your deposit too

theres 100s of theme camps to choose from, i am using minitropolis as an example as thats where im camping this year :P

google is your friend

ps welcome to eplaya and ur gona have the best buzz ever :)

I object to the word "rape" used in this context.

Hmmm... Really want an RV for it, want to take my own food, want to sleep on a solid bed, have access to a fridge etc..

I've found a couple of RV's, going to get it valeted after to avoid getting shafted on the deposit..

I'm taking an RV too. There's grey water dump service and potable water service on the playa. Big trucks come around to service RVs daily. Don't bring too much food. Have an extra ignition key. Bring a British flag and put up in window if you want to meet fellow Brits or people who like Brits :)

I assume you're flying in to Reno. Air Playa is a volunteer group who greets Burners at the Reno airport. They can give you info about where to find stuff in Reno, driving regulations, etc. I will be volunteering Aug 29, so maybe I'll see you there!

Also, in BRC check out Quixote's Cabaret, a really great theme camp from Bath, UK.

You're going to have a blast.

A euphemism pretties up an ugly thing; it does not exaggerate the ugliness by trivializing another uglier thing.

You may have to spend an entire day standing by the side of the road waiting for a truck to come by. Or you may luck out and find a truck right away...it's sporadic. The fee is about $60 per pump. Make sure your RV is close enough to the street so that the truck hoses can reach, other wise it's living in yer shite for a week!

Potable water service? That's a new one.

Best bet: bring your own water in gallon containers; conserve RV potable water usage; use the camp's porta potties; don't drink the RV water or you will die a horrrible death!
Don't bore your friends with all your troubles. Tell your enemies instead, for they will delight in hearing about them.
