Anyone know the state of the road this year? Still doing construction?

Also, what time is PM rush hour on Monday in the sacramento area? I'm trying to get to Fernley Monday evening and leave for the burn first thing Tuesday, I would like to avoid sitting in traffic if I can.

Travelled it going to 4th of Juplaya. In short IT STILL SUCKS. There is about 5 miles of "luge" with very narrow concrete K rail separated lanes, much the same as last year. Although I saw truckers managing it, they are professional drivers and I know that I will be white-knuckled coming through it in our RV. Anyone with a wide load should be sure you do that stretch while it is still daytime. The bad part is in between Truckee and Reno on the eastbound side.

I was just on I80 this weekend. It still sucks. Heading w. bound by approx. Truckee there is a gauntlet about 5 or 6 miles long. Super narrow. However, semis were managing it. Seemed like e.bound wasn't as bad, but I traveled that on Sun. early morning. I think they are deverting anyone over 9' wide.

yep it's bad. and another awful piece is right in the middle of reno, if you're coming up 395. they lanes shift back and forth and construction of new off and on ramps further clog it up.
the suggestion of trying to get through these areas in the day is a good one.

It's unreal. You can't drive down any street in Reno without hitting construction right now. I think our Govenor finally released our stimulas money.

Yep. Typical summer in Reno. There is quite a lot of construction going on. Parts of 395 are 55 miles an hour even though it doesn't look like anything is being repaired or built. It's speed trap central. Be sure to slow down.

I'm sure that's a hefty part of it. And you have to break ground by January, so there can't be too much hedging of it.
But if you look up stimulus fund usage, a lot of it is widening/repaving/usw.

It will be ok. It didn't stress me that much & I'm a stresser ! Just drive slow and leave plenty of room between yourself and the vehicle in front. I don't get why folks have to tailgate thru construction areas. POINTLESS in my opinion! :?

Used to haul over Donner Pass. Is way worse than crossing the Rockies. Sierra mud!

But, never experienced construction that was soo bad. Guess 4wheelers have a shorter temper.

Well I-80 Eastbound peoples...it doesn't appear the luge is going away any time soon. It took an hour and 45 minutes to get through it yesterday. :x

F-that! F'n Cal-Trans!

It will be nice when its done...then they'll just find another section to F-up! It's the Cal-Trans way :D
Perhaps fix the section up near Nyack, the part that feels like your losing a tire if you exeed 45mph.

Lost - was the slow down actually construction caused or was it just drivers trying to get through it?

Both, they still have about a 7 mile stretch down to one narrow lane. They were actually working on it yesterday. We were at a dead stop a couple of times for about 10-15 minutes each, then when we did move it was a 5mph crawl...if that. On the upside, I don't think they are doing actual construction during peak times on the weekends. Last time I came through on a weekend it took about 45 minutes with no construction actually happening and no events.

Cal Trans is sort of over a barrel. They can only work on the road in the summer and the winter tears it apart...

Going north bound the speed reduction to double nickels (55) starts at Neil Rd (exit 62)
There is also a speed zone south bound between Virginia St/Kietske Ln and Neil Rd because of the new ramp to access Meadowood Mall. Gonna be similar to the airport ramp.
Also don't forget the 55 zone in Washoe Valley due to construction near Bowers Mansion-Old 395 to connect the new freeway between Carson City and Reno on the south.

The construction north bound is becuse of said ramp as well as the attempt to widen the freeeway between Moana Ln and the bowl and to "fix" the bottle necks at Mill St and Glendale Ave on ramps....by using the existing right of way for the whole project.

I want to know why it takes 6-7 of them to stand around the one guy digging a hole? Do they dig in 5 minute intervals? Sign me up!
Actually a lot of (last summer anyways) had to do with the concrete pourers going on strike. Not sure what the excuse is this year.

Who knows, maybe it's cheaper to have them stand around waiting to do their particular function than it is to have to wait to bring in the equipment or the float person or whatever. I'm sure there's answers, I even know people I could ask, but I'm not gonna do that right now.

yeah. If you could ask, that would be nice. Because I don't think they appreciate it when I drive by and yell " GET TO WORK!!" at them.
It's just real discouraging when you have been stuck in a traffic jam because 4 miles of road is single lane because of construction & ONE guy is working.

Another spot on 80 where construction will be taking place is between McCarran hill and Wadsworth in Nevada. McCarran hill is just east of Mustang...around MP 27. That will commence on Monday August 9th.
Again, there will be lane and speed reductions. That project is a "grind and pave" and the gaurdrail will be replaced as well.
Q&D will be doing it.
Grinding will be done at night and paving and gaurdrail during the day.
