If I didn't have early entry through the village, I'm thinking I would roll into Reno on Sunday , grab a cheap hotel room at a casino and spend a leisurely Sunday going over my gear and supplies and doing any last minute shopping.
Have a nice big meal Sunday night, nice big breakfast early Monday morning and roll towards Black Rock at about 8am. In theory, the "GOTTA GET THERE AT 0001!" crowd has already been processed through the gate so it should be a much easier entrance process by rolling into Gerlach around 10am.
You're not really missing anything, have a full tummy, well rested, secure in the knowledge you definitely have everything you need and hit the playa with plenty of time to get a good spot, set up camp and launch straight into Monday night festivities.

I don't think there's any harm to businesses along the way. After all, D-Lot exists and to whatever extent, relieves some of the pressure on the approaches to BRC...folks are still spending money. I just wish folks going to D-Lot weren't treated like criminals.trystanthegypsy wrote:I must disagree... spending money in those small towns helps them pay for increased infrasctructure, highway maitenence, etc, and makes them more amenable to putting up with the traffic.dragonpilot wrote:I've always thot that the D-Lot made a lot of sense for those showing up early. It takes a lot of pressure off of the approach towns, and gets folks off the road.
We come down from Cedarville and have seen vehicles pulled over to the side with portions of the rigs sticking out in the road way, or vehicles ahead slamming on their brakes to pull over at the last second (drivers can't see pull-outs in the dark until they're right on top of them).
From a safety perspective I think the D-Lot serves a great purpose, but the word's the word...don't come early...clog up Gerlach and Empire, and jam up the highway instead.
Last year, if you showed up early, they let everyone who got there at midnight in first, then waited another couple hours before they started letting D-lot people in the gate. So you are in for a looonnng wait with only a couple porta-potties.
Of course, don't stop on the side of the highway. I agree there.
As far as being held up, who cares? D-Lot is one of the best pre-funks going! Ya can't really do anything except get out and stretch and join the impromptu block parties.
Don't bore your friends with all your troubles. Tell your enemies instead, for they will delight in hearing about them.
I haven't done the 0001 hour arrival yet, however I will say this.
We arrived last year on Monday around 10am and the location where our camp was going to be (non-theme, but we camp right about here every year 4:45 and F/G) was PACKED. It was freaky packed. Usually there are generous expanses of open space at that time on Monday, but not last year!
Our camp mates managed to save a barely RV sized hole for our vehicle to squeeze into, but we didn't even have room to set up our shade structure! Ugh!
Seems like people are coming earlier and earlier and in greater numbers! :O
I've always avoided coming in at midnight to avoid a huge line, but in the future, if I'm not getting in early, I will brave the midnight line to avoid the cramped quarters of last year.

That's nuts to hear that its so packed early on. I was hoping our earliness would allow us some good pickins for a camp spot. I guess we wouldn't be the only ones with that brilliant idea.
But it would make sense, actually, to not arrive at the stroke of midnight and maybe more around sunrise, just to see where you're going and what you're doing when setting up. (That would mean no Sunday night party though
)
I guess I was also just a bit worried about not being part of a problem, which it sounds like earliness might be. I just want to be maximally unannoying, if I can help it.

Hand these out and all will be forgiven:Katka wrote:I just want to be maximally unannoying, if I can help it.

You can arrive after dawn and embrace a shanty-town of the likes of the slums of Mexico City or Istambul.
Or you can arrive at midnight and see the sparkling glittering wonder of nighttime BRC.
I recommend the second choice. You have but one chance to burn that memory into your mind. The night-time one is soooooo much better.

I agree ... Its pitch black, only light you see is from your headlights and off in the distant city. You never know what you will see next! the energy that you get off the lights, shiny MAN off in the distance, with a distant dancing beat is amazing!!! You really need to experience that at least once. (I really with I could convey the experience!)Token wrote:You can arrive after dawn and embrace a shanty-town of the likes of the slums of Mexico City or Istambul.

My first two burns I arrived early Monday morning 2AMish, and set up in the dark. I met the most interesting people and ended up in a party without even going anywhere.... {hehe} I get tears in my eyes thinking about it \

Thought ya all might like to know that policies and procedures are being put into effect this that are designed to make the stack lot "unfun." There has been a growing trend over the past few years to just come hours early and start the party early.
This is not the event's intent.
Our goal is to get people to arrive on time, or as close to it as possible.
By having people arrive hours early and hang out in stack lot and throwing an impromptu party causes a whole bunch of logistical/legal and other headaches.
We love ya....just don't come until after midnight. Yes, we know that not everyone will get in right at midnight.
