I am infamous for costuming, both what I wear, what I get other people to wear and what I've donated to costume camps in the past.
Out of the...I don't know...10-20 outfits I brought last year I wore...three. Prom Princess Hitler, pirate queen and doom clown.
This year, I'm not even taking any costumes. I ended up wearing the same thing every day around camp, so I'm taking that again (well, two of them). And warm layer-y things for night, and that's it. Not wasting space on stuff I won't wear, this year.
On the one hand, it makes me feel weird and uncomfortable because I think, "Nobody will notice me or like me if I don't amuse them with my costume fuckery!"
On the other hand...I tell myself it's a good thing to leave that identity and comfort zone behind.
That didn't really answer your question.
There's many camps out there with costume items - Kostume Kult, for one. So you might just want to wait and let creativity hit you in the face on-playa.
And to bring out creativity ask yourself:
Do I want to shock? Amuse? Be pretty?
What sort of room do I have for costumes and the make-up and accessories that go with it?
How comfortable do I want to be?
Should I do a themed get-up?
Etc.

The first time I did it, it was roller skating prom princess Hitler.
redfreebird, some of the theme camps have themed events. You might find some of them and get started on the creativity. The Booby bar has themed days, I think there is even a Tutu Tuesday listed somewhere. A Superman costumed event towards a world record, Where's Waldo, SantaCon. There's even theme camps that help to dress you.
Go through as many of these pics (link at bottom of post) as you can to get ideas from past Burners. As a veteran of dozens of Mardi Gras costuming adventures, I can tell you that the people of Black Rock are the champions of inventive, incredible costuming super-powers.
Remember that whatever you wear must be robust enough to withstand 50mph driving dustwind and not fall apart (M.O.O.P.) in any way, so for example feathers are out. Some costumes look even more fabulous when covered in playa dust so keep that in mind as you browse the pics.

This isn't mardi gras and this isn't a mummer's parade. The thing is you can wear whatever you want! You don't have to, nor should you, "fit in".
Be unique, be you, experiment, or just wear what you are comfortable wearing or wear nothing at all. Anything is possible.
If everyone starts wearing the same crap as everyone else, then we just become a different version of Market Street.

The only thing I would add to that is "don't overthink".geekster wrote:Be unique, be you, experiment, or just wear what you are comfortable wearing or wear nothing at all. Anything is possible.
I basically lay out my ideas before I pack, and try to get it down to what I really need. Even knowing that, I still bring a different outfit for every day, yet end up wearing the same pants two or three days because I realize I have better things to do then worry about clothes.
My night clothes are packed in ziplocks, and pulled out as needed. I usually wear suits at night, but, as long as you can layer it, anything goes.

Suits & ties, occasionally a vest. Hats- top hat, bowler, fedora depends on the suit. Dress shoes that are already playafied.junglesmacks wrote:lol.. curious about this. Suits?Eric wrote: I usually wear suits at night, but, as long as you can layer it, anything goes.
I wear suits out at night in SF because I love them, I wear them on the playa for the same reason. A lot of people don't like wearing suits, but to me they're extremely comfortable & it's a nice style to be working!
I was debating on bringing my full clown look, but spending that much time on styling the facial hair & putting on make-up just seems like a waste. I know I wouldn't do it, so I think I'm dropping that idea.

yes, this is actually me, and other than the wig on the head the hair is permanently attached.

Exactly.
Don't overthink or overplan it.
Throw some things that you think are fun in a bag and wear what you feel like wearing.
Some days you may feel like dressing up, others maybe not.
It is very hot and dirty out there.
But do stay lit at night...on the outside.
It's not fun getting run over by bikes or art cars in the dark.
Lighty blinky things are everywhere and easy to find these days.
Just clip something on to your person before you head out.

I have tons of friends who do drag variations out there, including Burning Man "legend" Nambla:

I just think I'm too lazy to do it- the beard and mustache take about an hour to get to stick out like that, and there's no way I'm spending an hour on it out there! Plus, washing that hairspray out..... *blech*
