I'm an artist, (nah it doesn't pay) I run the ArtCar Fest here in Northern CA, I work part time for Moveon.org doing customer support, and when things get really tight I waitress. I also do improv. The mister, (aka my patron) is a tech writer for a giant tech firm. He is also a visual artist and sings.

I'm working on a degree in Art(focus in crafts) as well as a degree in Biology. Currently, I've got two sign-twirling jobs and also work at a pizza place. My newest hobby is aquascaping, the art of aquarium design.
And all that stuff eats my days up, but I'm making time for my first burn!

I'm a long-time computer geek. My spouse (about to be a first year burner) teaches buddhist meditation. Among my burner friends are more computer folks, several teachers, a law professor, a bartender, a lawyer, a graphics artist, a fetish model, several students, a videographer, two geographers specializing in resource mapping, a waitress, a contractor, and a couple of musicians. There are a lot more where the occupation is unknown.
In almost every case it makes no real difference.

Dinks, Geospyder - I'm a long term Oracle IT guy. Looking for my 20 year pin sometime soon. Nice to hear that it works out for "victims" of our acquisition spree. I work from home. My free time is mostly devoted to sleep.
I once told someone that since I work all day behind computer terminals (that's what we used ta call 'em) I'm a terminal case, but she didn't get the joke and her look of shock and sympathy has prevented me from ever using that joke again until now.

I’ve been working in the Biotech industry for over 18 years. My current job title is: Sr. Manager, Sourcing & Materials Management……..which means that I get paid to keep other people organized……..the job ranges from boring to dull as shit……but it pays the bills.
In real life, I’m a sculpture artist. I also make stone necklaces that I give away at Burning Man.

Is this some cutsey way of saying you gamble for a living, or do you actually break up old slot machine into pieces?LostinReno wrote:I break slot machines.
I'd ask for pieces, but I suspect that those are not given out.

I get paid to sit in a cubicle, and much like Dougy I write manuals that nobody ever reads. I also create online material that nobody ever watches.
I don't feel like my life's purpose is to sit in this cubicle, but it does afford me the ability to pay my bills and a few extra things like sporadic road trips, and of course Burning Man.
My dream is to get into some sort of counseling and then expand that into more alternative healing/counseling/ spiritual guidance type work. Not sure what yet, but my wheels are spinning. Oh and I write things that are more creative and risque than the things my company pays me to write.

I, too, am a slave to the man in the corporate world, though they haven't gotten an honest 40 hours outta me ever since I decided to go to BM this year. (Well, in truth, they didn't get an honest 40 hours outta me throughout most of 2009, but I had legitimate reasons for that.) I do property & contracts management for a wireless phone carrier, and I often wonder how I ended up in an office.Boijoy wrote: 40 hours a week I am a slave to the man in the corporate world. <sigh>
Never thought it would work out that way, but it pays the bills.
My divine purpose is to write, and the Universe keeps whapping me upside the head with this fact. So I write because I am meant to. I love to act but cannot find opportunity to do it much more than the occasional make-believe time with the kids. I can easily think of ten careers I would be better suited for than business. Photographer, chef, gardener, forest ranger, butcher, baker, candlestick maker... all more suitable than a desk jockey. Hell, I would model or provide erotic services but it turns out there's not much of a market for pale, freckly red-headed 40-something men.

No, sooooo do not gamble for a living. We basically do firmware regression testing. Test the new vs. the old. (common in most firmware companies) Find problems with code before it leaves the building....That said, I'll answer the next questions....No I don't know how to make them win, yes its random number generation, no there isn't a "trick" to any of it.theCryptofishist wrote:Is this some cutsey way of saying you gamble for a living, or do you actually break up old slot machine into pieces?LostinReno wrote:I break slot machines.

I doubt it. Private industry discovered that defined benefit pensions are unsustainable 30 years ago. Government is going to learn that lesson here in the next few years. They have reached the limit of which they can continue raising taxes to pay pensions that are way out of line with the population in general. If I worked for a government, I wouldn't be counting on seeing that pension for very long.
