Plastic Cobalt Bowls - Source?
I am currently building a costume head piece and am looking for something very specific to complete it. Simply, Im looking for a plastic bowl that has the curvature (in other words, it cannot be a straight line between the base and the mouth of the bowl). The bowl is going to have to be SEE-THROUGH cobalt blue specifically and that color alone seems to be why I have had problems finding this specific item.
Does anyone know a good supplier for these bowls? They cannot be made of glass due to them being playa bound and for safety issues.

Rats. Its a bit lighter than the color I seek. Glacier ice is about 2 shades lighter than cobalt.
The hunt continues? Anyone else know?

Great links. Some of them I had found before. Sadly the amazon link shows opaque bowls and I need the see-through effect. As for the ittala bowls, I believe its crystal and not plastic at all.
Yeah.. this seems to be a tough order. Cobalt I can find. Cobalt and opaque plastic I can find. Clear plastic of another color I can find. But not all 3 qualities which I need.

It sounds like you may have to rethink the idea, or put it on the back-burner (so to speak) for this year.Catwoman69y2k wrote:Yeah.. this seems to be a tough order. Cobalt I can find. If you need an incredibly specific piece to finish a costume it can sometimes take months to find it. I've been there. For Burning Man outfits I tend to go for the closest to my vision I can find, rather than be that specific.
There are going to be a lot of outfits out running around, and you may put all that work into the specific color you want & nobody but you will notice. Focus on the big picture, and adapt the individual pieces.

Well, I put it on the back burner about 2 years ago. Every year I check the market again for the item and dont see it. This is why I said I am down to dye the plastic that cobalt blue. Would hate to postpone it another year so thats why I suggested that if I could find it in a clear plastic which could be dyed the cobalt, than maybe that would work.
Simply put, I need the curvature of the bowl because these have to be curved cobalt pieces. Bowls seem to be the only way I would get that shape. I have looked for curved pieces in a few different thrift stores and even down in the areas adjacent to the LA fabric district (such as flower vases). So, definitly not for lack of trying.

Burning Man is even less "of a fashion show" than any other event that I do. I think if I did, I would never get stuff done since everything is subjective to one's experiences ("you cant please everyone")

Have you tried a store that specializes in plastics? I don't know how thick you need it to be, but you might get some thinner weight cobalt plastic sheets & then heat-form them into the shape you need.
Try either TAPP Plastics in SF or Canal Plastics in NYC.
I've had great luck with both places, and the people at TAPP are incredibly helpful.

I did actually stop by Tap Plastics while up in Frisco. I had to make a material run for someone. I did look there and they seem to have the colorss right. I just dont know where I could go to have them heat formed.Eric wrote:Have you tried a store that specializes in plastics? I now live in SoCal so obviously I would have to find somewhere local to do it. Just hope I could get it right and be consistant with the other pieces. For every other color, it was done off of plastic bowls (also clear coated) and it worked great. Its just cobalt which is a pain in the ass.

Blargh! Yeah. Im not a fan of the place myself. Well, that would be nice if they sold them here. We also scour the $1 aisle in our mom and pop supermarket here on the mountain.Shambala wrote:I really hate to refer that evil store Wally-Mart, but they are clearancing out all that stuff for the end of the season, and I saw those for a dollar there. I have no idea what you mean by a straight line between base and mouth. What size do you need (circumference and depth)?Catwoman69y2k wrote:Im looking for a plastic bowl that has the curvature (in other words, it cannot be a straight line between the base and the mouth of the bowl).
What specifically are the problems with them being glass? Louise and I bring glass containers and dining glassware to the playa every year. I understand the need to be careful, but I'm not sure it's necessary to rule glass out completely, depending on what you're going to do with it.They cannot be made of glass due to them being playa bound and for safety issues.

Eric, ya know.. you're just one super loving, helpful SOB. Props. I call for an Eplaya mutual gifting meetup. Re: Plastic Cobalt Bowls - Source?
I would estimate that the size and circumference which works best would be a 14 inch circumference with something like a 5 inch depth. All the other parts that have been completed used bowls with roughly these measurements. The reason that one of the previously linked bowls did not work is because there was no curvature from the base of the bowl (bottom) to the top of the bowl. Instead it was a cone with a flattened end (the bottom of the bowl).phil wrote: I have no idea what you mean by a straight line between base and mouth. The items will be attached to headgear and are thus near the eyes. I am building this for safety so I do have concern about something like glass being just above the eyebrow of the wearer. There is a slight aesthetic problem with using glass (since the other matching piece have already been done out of plastic clear material), but mostly its about safety and avoiding bringing as much glass as possible to the playa. I too have a few glass containers I bring but, since they never leave my camp and are only for my use, I feel I have a greater control over putting them in a situation where I break them vs having it on something that is going all over the playa.phil wrote:What specifically are the problems with them being glass? We used to make acrylic bowls in shop class. We would take a piece of plywood and make a series of holes in a circular pattern into which you insert dowels. Then you take a piece of sheet acrylic, cut it into a circle larger than the diameter of the circle of dowels. Heat it in an oven until it becomes soft, put it on the array of dowels and press it down. It makes a bowl with a scalloped edge. If instead of dowels, you used a mold, you should be able to force the plastic down into it and make a bowl without the scalloped edge.
