Shipping from NYC?
Does anyone know where I can get shipping space to haul my stuff to BM from NYC? The website http://www.nyccontainer.com/ hasn't been updated since last year. I'm traveling by plane and there's no way I can bring everything needed.

Lighten up your luggage by packing more wisely. Also, any consumable items that you'll be needing, buy when you reach the west. No need to buy booze locally and drag it with you. Next, you can ship boxes to any hotel you might be staying at, or to a friend who may live out that way. The biggest thing is to lighten that luggage though. It will take some work, but I know you can do it!!

That is a lot to pack, but start with a light tent, sleeping pad, and sleeping bag and then work outward from there. It's good to plan and gather things now, but also make lots of lists. There is Costco, Target, Walmart, Home Depot, Lowes, Trader Joe's etc. Also keep in mind about the weight of each item in your suitcase. Lightweight flashlights vs. heavy steel.
Get two large suitcases and keep them to 50lbs. each. Try to book an airline that has no luggage fees. With the money you save on shipping and airline fees, you can easily buy all your supplies for the entire week.
Lists baby, lists!

shipping from NYC
Can you contact the people that organize the shipping container from NYC? I don't see why they would discontinue it. Such a useful service, and so many people in NYC and the surrounding area that would find it useful. (i.e. the North-east coast)
I think if the organizers got tired of the hassle, then someone else would step in and fill the void. I imagine the organizers just haven't updated the site yet since last year.
Detroit, Michigan has a truck going to the playa as well. I think it's called 'Big Ass Truck' or something like that. It's part of a sound camp that goes every year. You can rent space out on it, for $8 a square foot or something like that.

I know I've seen a theme camp that either gives or sells space in their moving truck caravan to BRC but I can't for the life of me remember their name or where I saw it.
So, aside from exhausting the usual sources like the BM website rideshare board
http://www.burningman.com/calendar/year ... hp?id=3960 or Craigslist to find people either going to BM or doing cross-country moves to help you get your stuff there, I would try contacting your regional
http://regionals.burningman.com/us_ny_nyc.html. They'll have more familiarity with whose going and how and should be able to hook you up with someone who has extra space to take your stuff.
Hope this helps.

"Dear NYC area burners....
The NYC Container is going to happen again this year!
We're post-FIGMENT, post-PDF, post-Flipside, but pre-Transformus. So now it's time to get ready for the next adventure!
We apologize for the delay in communciations but we are awaiting news from our shippers to figure out how this BP nightmare is going to impact the costs of the container, which includes gas. They give us a price determined on the trucking from Reno and to the rails from Jersey, and as usual, all is speculative.
So hang on! We'll be with you soon.
Some basic dates:
We are going to let you know within the next week or so about pricing. Expect a bit higher than last year, obviously.
We are going to start selling after the 4th of July holiday so everyone can get their PEX on, etc.Look for a specific date soon.
Our website is still from last year. We'll change it when we get a chance. Give SLIMEHAG COPIOUS AMOUNTS OF LOVE for doing that.
So here we go, yo.
Love to all,
Cinemagirl and Nickname

Container from DC
I am in the same boat! I am flying from DC to BRC and would love to rent space in one of the containers. Anyone know the closest shipper to me? Contact info greatly appreciated!
Someone said something interesting: ship to hotel? Hotels really let you do that?

Re: Container from DC
Absolutely! I have two heavy boxes of stuff and will be shipping them ahead to my hotel in Reno with a note: "Hold for guest Shambala, arriving on August 28th." The boxes will either be in my room, or held at the front desk for me.vulturaobscura wrote:Someone said something interesting: ship to hotel? Hotels really let you do that?
Some of my thrift store clothes will be given away in BRC, so it will make returning easier. Also, think of that carry-on bag for some of the heavier crap that might push you over the limit on the return.
Other thoughts for those flying are, bring your old and almost worn out clothes and undies, and dispose of them before heading home. I always gift enough stuff from my bags, to make traveling home easier.
The fear that a lot of people have is that they will be in the middle of nowhere and need something important. This is where you need to sift though that stuff and decide that maybe you won't need a scientific notation calculator while at Burning Man.

Hey, a calculator is a calculator. You're dealing with someone who can't count to 21 unless I'm undressed.Token wrote:That would be a Reverse Polish Notation calculator to you sir.
And take that silly hat off and look me in the eye when talking to me young man.
As far as my silly hat, THAT IS MY HEAD, SIR!
