Hi guys and gals! New guy here.
Hi all. I'm Joel from Phoenix, AZ.
Was turned on to this site only recently. I have some questions to ask about what you crazies are up to.
First off, being from the desert myself, why the heck do you numb nuts have this event when you do? Why not late September?
Flame on.
I really enjoy your site. And ignore the evaporative cooling advice at your own peril.

I would like to spend the days riding and the nights partying. Nevada ain't the purtiest place, you know. It's one of the ugliest places on Earth. Just would like to make the best of it. BTW, I am a regular visitor to Nevada. Have friends there.
Are there groups that ride? Or am I a bad guy for asking?
What kind of quad you riding, Burningquestions?
You know, if you paint your dirt bike and tie some lights to it, then it's automatically an Art Car and you can drive where you want.
I ride a Honda XR650R. I'll be happy to camp on the extreme outer ring. We have numerous quads. Can we ride the quads in town if we keep it under 5 mph?

Joel, spend some time reading up about the event. The only motor vehicles running through the city are "mutant vehicles" which are registered art cars and registered special needs vehicles. Of course the local law enforcement goes without saying. Everyone else is either on foot or on bicycles. Once you get into the event you must *park* your vehicle UNLESS you have one of the above mentioned registered vehicles. http://blog.burningman.com/metropol/the ... -vehicles/

Doesn't matter where you camp--still 20 bucks to get back in. You get caught entering the event anywhere other than the gate they'll kick you out permanently.burningquestions wrote:I ride a Honda XR650R. I'll be happy to camp on the extreme outer ring. When I was a kid I used to pray every night for a new bicycle.
Then I realized that the Lord doesn't work that way so I stole one and asked Him to forgive me
As much as I would love to give you some juicy disinformation ...
Your dirt bike and all ATVs will be impounded and held at the gate. Or you can choose not to enter. Your choice.
Try a bicycle instead.
I really don't want to ride in town. Would rather like to ride outside the town and explore during the day. Will I really be penalized for my individuality?

I don't think you're quite getting the event. There is a lot of, well, misinformation above, all good natured, of course, but like Token said, no quads. Plenty of riding the other 51 weeks, but not at BM. Strictly foot and pedal. Don't bring it. It won't get in.
And I, like I'm sure many others, would take exception with the ugly Nevada thing. Some of us consider the playa and the surrounding Black Rock Desert to be beautiful. Goes for other deserts, too. We do not consider it a wasteland. It not only deserves your respect, 'cause it'll bite you if you're not careful and prepared, but maybe your admiration. That's why I became a Friend of Black Rock. Take another look and you will start to get part of what this is about. Of course, YMMV.

No quads in Black Rock City, as said, they will be held at the gate for the full week, no check in check out privileges. The BLM has a two mile no-go zone around the event where only law enforcement and emergencies services may drive. The only in and out is through the gate, $20 fee, and no, not on the quads as they will be in the impound lot.
You'll have to explore the area some other time.
Read the survival guide, it is all in there. We're sad you haven't read your survival guide yet.

Not sure how serious the OP is. It sounds like he's just yanking our collective chains. But in case you are serious:
I grew up in southern California where it was pretty popular to go out to the desert to ride motorcycles (quads, etc), drink beer, and raise hell.
THIS IS NOT THAT TYPE OF GIG.
Seriously, there is NO REASONABLE WAY to make this a motorcycle/etc adventure. None. You will not be able to bring your motorsport vehicles into the playa, and camping at Burning Man to indulge in motorsports near by would be horribly tedious and expensive.
DO NOT BRING YOUR QUADS TO BURNING MAN.
If you just want to get drunk and rowdy, coming to Burning Man from Phoenix is a crazy expensive and uncomfortable way to do it. While there is plenty of partying going on, it is NOT primarily about the partying. Not even close.
And you'd hate most of the music. You don't sound like the type who likes techno/dj/dance music.
Oh, and in case you missed it:

Just to clarify, the event boundaries are larger than the city boundaries. You cannot ride the quads within the event boundaries, regardless if you are in or outside the actual city limits.

Last year a guy in our camp was on a 6 month RV cruise of America and he was towing a trailer with his quad and street motorcycle.
At gate inspection he was told that none of those vehicles were allowed inside the event. He had to off load the bikes, lock them up, cover them as best he could and leave them in a lot outside of the event until he left Burning Man.
I'm going to guess those policies haven't changed since last year.
