Realistic travel time from Reno to BRC

Post by junglesmacks » Mon Aug 02, 2010 6:58 am

..trying to find info on this, but haven't so far.

Taking into account the speed limits, traffic, etc.. what is a realistic travel time to BRC from Reno?

Right now, an hour and thirteen minutes.

On Sunday night, the 29th it depends on how fast that 59 VW Vanagon can go with 500 gallons of water in it and the P51 mustang fuselage strapped to the roof.

Anywhere from 2 to 4 hours, more if there are accidents or big breakdowns.

Wow is that it? I figured with all the 25mph zones, jack rabbits, etc etc that it would be longer than that..

So, leaving out of Reno around 730pm-ish with a 16' box truck on Sunday the 29th should hopefully put us at the gate and in decent position around midnight.. is the thinking out loud.. :?:

Then there's the wait at the gate. Midnight opening is notoriously crowded. we shoot for dawn, but we shoot for dawn no matter which day we arrive. Light enough to see, cool enough to set up.

Is it as bad as the Exodus? Never tried Sunday night.

Half as bad, unless you get routed to D lot, then you sit on your hands for hours. We did one or two in the morning and it was so bad we'll skip it.

Some people really enjoy the confusion clusterfuck in the dark, inhaling fumes of idling vehicles, but not my style.

How fast does the first midnight cluster get taken care of and traffic actually moving and not idling?

A few thoughts . . .

Do follow the speed limits. The 25 zones are brief, then you get the 70 on the reservation land.

If a jack rabbit crosses your path, don't swerve. Really. Just clean up the mess later.

Don't overtake. Really. Especially in a truck. You will get there. Two years back, we saw a 20 foot Ryder on its side and the only way it got there was trying to overtake and momentum taking its toll. The scariest thing I see every year is someone in a rental RV trying to pass several cars while the year round Black Rock denizens are fleeing the playa coming southbound.

In the event you choose to bend the driving regulations, bring cash. My understanding is that the reservation police want payment on the spot.

On the upside, 447 between Wadsworth and Gerlach is probably the best rural road in all of Nevada if not on the West Coast. It is only rivaled by the roads in Shetland, Scotland, that were put down by oil money.

That being said, 2 hours is reasonable with no traffic. I've done SF to BRC in 6 hours though that is pre-event so no wait to get in. And that includes a stop at the Wadsworth store though skipping Reno, Empire, and Gerlach.

Louise and I plan on 2 and a half hours from leaving our motel in Reno till we pull up at our camp site in Hushville, and that's been a good number for years. This takes into account the various speed limits/speed traps and being behind a Volkswagen van with a couple of motorized couches on top and a hippie driver going 35 on flats and 15 up hills that we can't get around.

Drive safely. There are cows in the road, and it wrecks their day if you hit one. To say nothing of your car.

Definately the scariest people on the road I saw were the rental rv drivers. I avoid them like the plague. Last year was my first burn and there were far too many breath taking moments when idiots driving 30' of terror jump out of line and try to pass in the head on, only to swerve back in line and cut somebody off gaining one position in a line of 50,000. Were all going to the same place, and were all going to wait in the same line to get in, so PLEASE, take your time and be safe, you're not the only one on the road.

Provided you stay ON it. The shoulders of the road are VERY soft. If you pull off, there is a chance you won't be getting back onto the road again without help.

Do NOT allow the car to wander off the road onto the shoulder at highway speed. You will might not be able to get back on the road again or maintain control of the vehicle.
