Need suggestion for Recycled Wishing Tree construction

Post by 0mShantiLeigh » Fri Aug 06, 2010 12:18 pm

Hello! The burn is nearly three weeks away, and I have one project left to tackle. I hope someone can offer me a suggestion. I am planning on making a small tree out of paper mache and other materials for an interacitve activity. I would like to be able to burn the tree at the end of the week but I am wondering how toxic newspaper ink is if burned? Is burning newspaper frowned upon? Also, does anyone have any experience with natural durable alternatives to laundry starch? I really want to make this happen so any suggestions are appreciated.

~Hugs~

You are fine with ink. It is ok to burn.

Corn starch, flower + water etc. Also good to burn. I hear semen is also just as sticky and the correct consistency. Plenty available on the 7:30 spoke neighborhood.

You know, these are the exact kind of thoughts I have when someone loads a grand piano into a trebuchet, lights the piano on fire, then launches it into deep playa.

Glad you brought it up.

Laundry starch is probably fine too. wikipedia says it's just vegetable starch+water with some added perfume etc.

Fantastic! I'll bring a collection bucket, stir in a bit of playa dust and take it home with me to use for an even BIGGER tree next year. It even goes with the theme of the piece "Recycled Wishing Tree"!

Newspapers pretty much went over to soy inks, instead of the heavy metals, in the nineties. I don't know what they use for pigment. People with pet birds might know.

Thanks y'all. I am going to use the newspaper since it is made with soy ink (didn't know that, thanks!). Hopefully the cornstarch/flour mixture will be sturdy enough if built up around some chicken wire and a coffee can. If not, I'll try the regular laundry starch, or the other thing ;-) If you happen to stop by Don't Panic Camp, feel free to visit the Lighted Garden and water the tree with a recycled wish!

Fun fact, the wall-street journal has always used vegetable ink and the paper is better. Get the paper damp enough and you can use it to shape glass. (more is obviously going on, but eh)
I have a little bit of Savannah with me. Shhh...

7:30 has for a long time been the de facto gayborhood.

It used to be home to Penetration Village and the now infamous Stiffy Lube. Those camps are now gone but the spirit continues.

Its a happy place.
