I95 coming in from Las Vegas

Anyone have any info on how the trip from Las Vegas is? Any hot-spots (law enforcement or otherwise) to watch for (asides from all of em) - anything special to check out along the way? Any good camp grounds closer to Fallon; Fernley areas?

it's our first time out and we're stupid excited but want to be safe!

I-95 from Vegas to Ferntucky will take approx. 7 hours (6 if your a lead foot like me and don't have to stop) . Fernley to B.M. can take anywhere from an hour and a half to several hours, depending on what time your planning on coming. LEO's tend to really camp out around Tonopah (I think the NHP is Tonopah's largest employer! LOL). Just use your head and slow down in the towns. The speed limits drop from 70 down to 35-35 in a matter of a few hundred yards. Depending on what you are driving, gas up in Tonopah and most likely Hawthorn, there is no other gas. You'd also be very wise to top off your tank again in Fernley as Gerlach becomes an epic clusterfuck!

Oh and if your into cool old military stuff, Hawthorn has a cool old museum as well as the remains of Babitt. (Streets and foundations but all of the buildings are gone.) Babbitt used to be the military housing/neighborhood for the weapons depot in it's heyday.

Unless you have an affinity for sagebrush, Hawthorne is also convienent pee stop between nowhere and anywhere. As Lost mentioned, beware of Tonopah. Young just out of the academy types that will stop you for 2 miles over the limit (which seems to change every 100 yards).

So there's actually a "Ferntucky"? I always just sorta thought that it was a local nickname for Fernly.

Not only do we have Ferntucky but we also have a Fallabama. Both are full of rusty pickups - but then so is the rest of Nevada. If you are from out of state you can become an official Nevadan but pulling out your gun and shooting the remains of a rusty old truck. Lost can tell you about the day I became an official Nevadan.

Just a nickname for fernly.

One piece of advice, there are lots of spots on the 95 where you slow to 55, then 45 then 35, then back up. The speed limit begins at the sign and the cops are ruthless for writing tickets in those towns.

I called it Ferntucky the first time, then called it by Fernley the second time in that post. It's all good. It wasn't my intention to confuse anyone.

Ya'll coming up in an RV? If so, I highly recommend the Desert Rose RV Park on Hwy 50 a few miles east of Fernley. We stopped there last year for showers and and our launch point for our assault into BRC. Great people and Burner friendly.

Super Wal Mart and Scolari's just up the road on your way to I-80 for stocking your rig before making the last of the drive.

Best advice I can give as a fellow Texan having made that route several times, obey the speed limits like they were your new religion (think of th earea around College Station and make it worse) and take advantage of the stops along the way for fuel and what not as there is a lot of open, boring space between stops.

We tend to cruise right through Vegas and make our first stop in Indian Springs. Food is decent at the Indian Springs Casino and there is a Shell and a Chevron there. We have always seen NHP around here.

Tonopah is a fairly picturesque little mining town. We've never explored it much, just stopped for gas.

Hawthorne. There has always been a police car running radar at the top of the road coming around Walker Lake up near Avalon.

The stretch between Avalon and Fallon is a brutal drive if you are rolling across at 1AM. Fallon to Fernley is not too bad and there is substantially more civilization on that leg.

I also recommend the Holiday Inn Express in Fallon. We've made that our stopping point the last three years on the way out to do some laundry, showers, a soak in the hot tub, etc. The steakhouse at Stockman's Casino next door is pretty damn good too. They also have plenty of space for RV/truck trailer parking.

If you are doing an RV, the 95 route has some decent grades, but nothing too bad. I think the worst grades are on the last leg of Fernley to Gerlach. Lots of long rolling ones.

Make a stop at the Empire Store. Good people and good food at the deli counter.

For that entire run on 447, keep to the speed limits even closer. I recommend aiming for 3-4 mph under the posted limit. You'll be crossing reservation lands and they do not fuck around as Burning Man provides a huge source of citation generated revenue for them. Indian tacos are supposed to be good along that run as well.

I must warn you, if you are heading up Route 95 and find yourself in the Walker River Indian Reservation near the town of Schurz, do not, I repeat DO NOT, go into the Four Seasons Fireworks Shop on the south end of town. You will find they carry skyrockets, mortars, and a complete assortment of explosives. These are illegal at Burning Man. I know that setting off wonderful pyrotechnics seems like a good idea, and some people may be tempted to order these ahead of time online knowing that they give you a 10% discount plus a free sample, not to mention they take all major credit cards, but do not do this. You could get into trouble and that would be wrong. So do not shop for large fireworks in Schurz which is about an hour south of I-80 on Route 95 right on your way to Burning Man on the east side of the highway.

I cannot thank you all enough for all the tips. Yes, we'll be coming up in an RV from Vegas, where we'll be staying a night, hooking up with relatives and collecting a marriage license since our friends are getting married... they might do it in Vegas or maybe at BM...

We've heard nothing but trouble about the LEOs and want no trouble outta those guys so definably no stops at firework places - that just seems like trouble!

We'll definitely check out the desert rose as we're looking for a spot to squat waiting on midnight Monday morning... and someplace to squat for a day after exodus to get our shizzy back together while re-packing our gear to ship back to tx; cleaning that rv; and just coming to grips with the default world. I imagine it'll be much more difficult to come to grips with than after Flipside.

Thank you again and I sooooo hope to get to meet all of you!

Oh and pancakes back at my place in Katy Tx 09/09/2010!!!! LOL

I see a warning about Schurz in the survival guide from something that happened 5 years ago... is this still relevant? Has something happened since? Any comments... because from what I can see... i95 from Vegas goes right through Schurz or are we talking about the I95 that branches west under the town?

I remember a conversation about that a few years back. Most people have not had a problem there from anecdotal responses. Nobody reported any bad experiences there the last time the issue came up.

My advice would be to act like you would act in any other podunk hick town. Be low key, be polite, try not to make a spectacle of yourself, and don't do anything illegal where someone might see/smell it and you will probably be ok.

Oh, one other thing. Whoever drives that last leg to BRC needs to be well rested and fairly focused along 447. On the other side of the solid white line is a very soft, tire sucking shoulder.

If you cross your rig over the line and into that at any kind of speed, you will likely be going wheels over into the ditch.
