What route do you take from the South? (Georgia girl here)
I've never driven past Louisiana, so the drive itself is going to be amazing.
I've map quested, googled, and talked to friends. I want to take the quickest and hopefully easiest route. What route do you take?
(give me some states/highway numbers, etc please)

I think there's other threads discussing this...you have two options. Up 40 through TN, KY, MO, WY, etc. or straight across Texas.
I hear that one is very boring, and the cops like to pull people over.
I loved the ride up 40 last year, seeing states I'd never been to (Utah, Nevada, etc.).
Also, the people I rode with last year have a spot open at the last minute, if you know anybody (in Atlanta) who wants to leave on Friday, get there Monday, leave next Monday, get back Thursday.

I've heard the Texas route is boring and full of cops too. I've also heard of some people taking different routes in the north. Mostly 40 but some of the routes vary.
I wish I could tag along with the group, but I have to get home fast to get back to college.
I'm going to miss the temple burn, but am just really glad to make it this year!

Why do you have to miss it? A large handful of my friends - all Atlantians, actually - are leaving right after it, to head into Reno to catch flights home Monday morning.shroom wrote:I've heard the Texas route is boring and full of cops too. Did you join the BurnATL group? That'd be a more concentrated place to discuss routes (ie, you'd be asking a bunch of people from the area, who've done it before).
Stay if you can, and leave afterwards. I'd be perfectly happy missing the Man, as long as I was there for temple burn.

I'm driving home, not flying. I have class on Tuesday so I'll be speeding my butt off. My friend who is coming with me also has class and can help me drive.C.f.M. wrote: Why do you have to miss it? I really want to stay for the temple, but just can't. I'm really thinking of taking summer classes next year so I can have the fall off. Yes just for Burning man, but why not? I could stay as long as I wanted that way.

Oh wow, so you're leaving like, Saturday night? It took us a solid...3+ days of driving 24/7 (shifts) to get from ATL to BRC.shroom wrote: I have class on Tuesday so I'll be speeding my butt off. My friend who is coming with me also has class and can help me drive.

75 N > 24 N / 27N to Nashville/ STL
70 W > 29 N > 80 W > NV/BRC?
1 day 15 hours as per Google maps
(That's actually the way that google maps routed as well after I guessed it.. lol)

Shroom,
Wow, you get double points for making that trip. You'll start off your burn with a tour of the country that may be more memorable than the burn itself. Here are a couple of suggestions to help you on your way.
Central Rockies Route: Highlights of this trip are it gets you north of the Mason Dixon Line quickly for slightly less solar heated travel. You’ll go through Manhattan (Kansas), be bored for the better part of a day. Wake up the next morning to cross the Colorado Rockies then slide down into the canyon country of Utah. And you’ll make the last leg across Nevada seeing some of the best parts of the Great Basin.
With the possible exception of Kansas and mostly Interstate travel I don’t think there are any low lights. Crossing Kansas and eastern Colorado isn’t a noteworthy experience in my opinion, but you’ll certainly get good at seeing minor irregularities in the distance if you do.

Northern Exposure Route: Have some spare time want to see the north? Advantage, you don’t have to cross Kansas. Disadvantage, you get to cross North Dakota. Ok, it’s not really that bad. There are things to see there other than corn and soon you’ll be entering Montana. This route is fun, but considerably longer. Make sure you have the time to complete the drive *and* see things along the way (like Chicago).

Taken 10: Don’t drive too fast across Texas, especially the western half of the state, you’ll end up missing all there is to see. The southern route is actually one of my favorites despite its many potential pitfalls. I grew up in Colorado and as a result learned to fear and dislike things that came from the “southâ€

There is a small weird spot where you transit from Missouri to Nebraska if you want to avoid Omaha.
I think I left 29 at Nebraska City and took the route across to Lincoln.
I got lost for a bit in Lincoln and it still was easy.
You're on one road most of the trip to the freeway.
But it isn't a necessary shortcut.
As suggested, 29 to 70 to 55 or 24 going south.

One really cool thing about using Google maps to plan your trip is that you can click and drag your route along the way, and it auto-updates the directions and times for everything.. such a cool tool.shroom wrote:Thanks you all so much! I will have the super duper route map now!
I can not wait!
