I'm a huge fan of Accuweather's monthly outlook. They seem to be pretty right on with their temp predictions.. not sure how they do it so well.

Looks like after a below normal temp stretch, things are getting ready to go way above normal.. extreme heat near the 100's next week..

But.. notice how the low's are consistently below average as well..

No more fog horns as I understand it. Boats all have gps or some such.

There are usually still fog horns, they're just not official anymore. There's some sort of fancy warning system- I think Fishy's right on the GPS.

Though with this endless fog I haven't been hearing them. I don't know if they decided it was "too much" when the fog never ends. or if the budget crises finally silenced them. I miss the sound. Hopefully they'll start 'em up again.

They did stop them for a short time in the (late 90's??) when the new system went active, but people complained & they brought them back shortly after that.

That looks terrible. They say it is a biker friendly festival, but only for well-conditioned bikers. That stuff is frackin' hard to deal with. :(

According to my 4th of Juplaya resource....fuck I missed it!.....the playa is hard packed. And in his opinion, the best the playas looked in years. In his words..."like the good old days!"

Keep in mind, they placed the event way up past 12 mile.

I would guess all bets are off regarding the magic 8 ball.

if the playa is that crunchy i'm thinking knobby tires are the way to go. i've a 26x2.25 on the rear and a 26x2.12 on the front. single speed cruiser.

its gotta be better than the bmx i was riding there before

Update?

Postby Pryde » Tue Aug 24, 2010 12:07 am

Any updates? Is biking out to the trash fence going to happen or are we going to get stuck? Is it time to bring my first electric car or will bikes get us around without being stuck everywhere like in 2008?

Thanks!

What do you expect to read? That it's smooth and hard packed as a Shuttle landing strip?

It's going to be just as shitty as it has been for the last 10 years.

Start riding your bike now, 20 miles a day and you will think it's Tarmac out there.

token, your comments are always worthless. keep em up. we revel in your stupidity. i have a strong urge you've never even been to the playa. all people want to know is whether the playa is hard or soft. pretty simple. and token, it hasn't been at all the same over the last ten years, but how would you know that, ridiculing yourself from behind a laptop.

shush, token is awesome and hilarious. I spend so much time on eplaya, it's more fun answering in a fun way than answering the same questions 18 bajillion times.

My first year was 2004 and I have been every year since. The playa was actually quite hard and very easy to ride on the first four years I went. As a matter of fact, it was not even a consideration to ride off as far as I wanted in any direction with zero challenge. I am not saying it SHOULD be that way this year, I just prefer it and hope it will be like that. Of course, everyone here goes to Burning Man because they prefer some element of predictability as well. Some repeating element. I am just hoping for hard playa. Get it?

Nah, I think the words would've sounded more like "POOT", or "FART" if that were the case.

Report from the playa this evening is:

Weather here is BEAUTIFUL!!
Playa has firm spots with lots and lots of loose dusty areas, sometimes wider than a house.
Art is going up.
