Not all money is frozen. They raised over 20k via Kickstarter.
This is also a non-profit IRS snafu. Paypal is just following the rules.
The BMORG should just Burning Man Up and float them the cash until the IRS gets their ass in gear in 5 months.
No reason to milk the community any more than necessary.

I really don't understand why they froze the account. I use pay pal to pay for lots of things from "for profit" companies. Why does the status of the group entitle pay pal to freeze the account? The group's status with the IRS is between them and the IRS unless the IRS specifically ASKED them to freeze it.

I'm going to call them and ask them about this and why I should trust them.
I think the Flux Corporation account is the one to inquire about.

I dunno, David Best built the shrine to dead people for years without bitching about fundraising. Ever since he retired from the deal its been nothing but drama.chris2010 wrote:OK... It sucks that it has to happen that way!Token wrote:Nothing. They whine and complain but in the end they build it and then burn it.
Eventually they get their money from PP.
I don't like the direction this has taken. The BORG has gotten real cheap and stingy on acount of the LLC members retirement accounts.
This is the new way. The builders signed up
for this, and I hope they have good credit cards.

Token, I agree with you.
Burning Man was there long before David's first temple in 2000. If the community needs a temple, there will be a temple, BMORG funding notwithstanding. It might be smaller, it might be funkier, but there will be one if there needs to be one.

So aside from the typical snipe what's so fucking wrong with the people who assembled this whole goddamn thing setting themselves up for retirement? The BORG has gotten real cheap and stingy on acount of the LLC members retirement accounts.
Anyone else here think they'd get a bit of a chapped ass if their neighbor whined about you not spending X amount of money to build a nicer fence along your common property line because you decided to put X amount of money into your 401(k) retirement account?
Sorry, but that kind of whiney fuck yipping is Level 5 chickenshit.
Really, what the fuck do you care about what they do with their money?

Well, I have to tip my hat to anyone who is able to make a career out of a party, that is a separate issue from the temple issue. I just don't understand what enforcement role Pay Pal has for IRS regulations and who appointed them sheriff. Both for profit and non-profit groups use Pay Pal.
I have known some people who have had their accounts frozen by Pay Pal because of malicious complaints by people who just didn't like the people who had the account. If enough people complain, the account gets frozen and it takes a bunch of back and forth to get it sorted.
But what perplexes me is when did Pay Pal become a government agency? Did the IRS order them to freeze the account?

This is hot off the press. Not confirmed.

Hello Friends!
In a very "unusual" move, this morning Paypal agreed to release the funds
that were being held due to the delay in processing our 501c status via the
IRS.
However, any future transactions will remain unavailable to the Temple of
Flux 2010 until the paperwork is resolved.
The Temple of Flux Team are very grateful to know that we have such
tremendous community support.
There is no doubt that your actions have helped to accelerate a resolution.
The Temple of Flux is still facing a $15,000 shortfall and we could really
use help to close the gap.
Please consider a donation today. Thank you to those who have already helped
us on our way.
It is going to be great!
Sincerely,
Colinne Hemrich - Treasurer - Temple of Flux 2010

Well, this IS good news!
Even tho ppal is private, there is still financial exchange going on, monies deposited and withdrawn (making it in their eyes a bank), and they are required to follow the same reporting requirements as any other "financial institution"... again, thanks to current fed regs. Pypal may not consider themselves a"bank", but if the govt definitions say otherwise, then evenif they're not a bank the Govt will look at them as one.
I've been thru this a few times, it's usually not a biggie, they are making sure it's not being used as a front or laundry for terrorism money. The 501c3 doesn't help (because if they're spending as a 501c3 they need the dux in a row to use the $$$, or pay the taxes on it and get it refunded later, which is what will likely end up happening).
Hopefully, the govt wiill expedite the process and the $$$ will clear and be released and all will be right with the world again!!
Hugz,

IRS, Treasury, and DHS can (and do) monitor all transactions over a certain amount (thanks to the unPatriot Act et seq.) and with the monies involved, combined with the NP app may have raised a red flag causing them to drop a hammer.FaeTora wrote:NO. It has nothing to do with the government. PayPal is not a bank and thus does not have to obide by ANY of their rules. They can do as they wish.
