My first time, and I'm excited. Looking forward to meeting new people, and having new experiences. I'm 6'2', 175, 55, dark blond/brown, smooth, non-smoker. I enjoy photography, hiking, camping, theater, movies, massage, yoga and travel. Will be off to a volunteer archaeology service week at Mesa Verde after Burning man.

Single and would like to meet a nice hairy price Charming.... lol

I will seek out all the gay theme camps!

Tell me more about barter, say to get a root beer float. Someone said to trade hugs and kisses, others said beads and trinkets, other said hand crafts. I'm a photographer, and have boxes of photographs that didn't make it into albums, or as gifts. Should I bring some better photo snapshots to use for barter, or stick to hugs and kisses, or cheap trinkets?

Barter is not gifting. A gift is freely given with no expectation of return. You don't have to gift everyone you meet.

Generally I'm not a big fan of cheap trinkets & think the best gifts are personal. A few years ago a friend of mine went through a stack of his old prints and chopped them up and glued them onto magnet strips. They were stunningly beautiful snippets of both urban and natural landscapes. I still have mine - a sliver of light down a NYC alley.

I generally bring a few different types of gifts. Many are just extras of supplies I cannot live without and some are things I've made but most are useful and hard to drop. Condoms, mints, lip balm, cookies, old Altoid tins I've spray-painted & stenciled, pens and tiny notebooks (who remembers email addresses?), necklaces I've made from objects picked up during travels.

Anyway, don't worry too much. Heartfelt hugs are just awesome.

Depends on the camp. Root Beer floats require nothing in return except a smile and maybe some friendly conversation. When we're serving--Tuesday through Friday from 2pm to 4pm, it's pretty crowded and we try to keep the line moving. We have a nice lounge area to enjoy, and a dome where someone form the camp will be spinning something that should be good for dancing.

Cheap trinkets? Leave that shit at home. I think most people would rather just give you something, than have you try and barter crap for it.

Bring something if you like and if it feels okay to you, but really don't stress it your first year, especially getting into the game this late. And remember, whatever you offer may or may not be accepted, so try and detach from that little bit of ego need. And always, there is work to be done, so offering to pound a few tent mega-stakes or wash a few dishes is always an option no matter what you brought.

There seem to be many groups sponsoring food (bacon, grilled cheese, root beer floats), or beverages throughout the playa. What is the general expectation to get these items? Do they just give them freely, do you need to know the people, do they barter/trade? Do they just want thanks?

We tend to give our wine and Otter Pops to most anybody (no wine to minors) who isn't a yahoo, douchebag, sparkle pony, dirty hippie, or darkwad. Chances are you are none of those.

Like Jkisha posted above, their camp offers the root beer floats between certain hours on certain days. Grilled cheese is same thing, late night/early am offerings at I believe Black Rock Diner. Will check on that. Pancake Playhouse has morning hours. They don't expect anything from you if you happen to be there at their hours, it is their gift. But on off hours you wouldn't expect to just visit the camp and it is just handed to you. These are planned events and might I add, maybe loosely planned. Playa serendipity... However.....there are times when you just might be strolling by someone's camp and they will offer you a plate of pancakes, or bacon, or ice cream....you get the idea. I'm kinda with dragonpilot here. I love mass made trinkets. Sadly, I love the ones of 40 years ago more than the ones now, but I can live with that tension.

I think what really makes me sad about this is that the mardi gras beads and other plastic that you are so ready to throw out are actually wonderful materials for art classes--elementary schools and nursing homes in particular. If I knew how to run a drive for those on playa, I would.
In Oakland, these people collect these sorts of materials and sell them cheap to school teachers and pretty cheap to free range artist and cripples like myself.
San Francisco has a similar place.
Even better, they have a page on how to start one where ever you are.
I keep hoping that someone will start one, but they never do.
(Yeah, doacracy, I should start one. But I don't need to, living with in a mile or so of one...)
(Maybe I should restrain myself next time someone complains about being unable to go to the burn because they are a teacher.)

Edited to Add: Actually, one of the pieces I made for AntiM's this year uses mardi gras beads.

All this talk about trinkets, but wondering if you found a camp to camp with? we will have naked yoga on two days at Comfort and Joy (see signature) and hope to meet you and all the other newbie gay burners. and yes, I'm virginal.

regarding trinkets, I will be handing out lip balm and small packets with nuts and raisins along with my calling card which is supper cool.

tick tock the truck leaves on Saturday and I will be on Playa Monday to help build the big tents and set up solar array! and hopefully the only Nuggets on the playa.

Unclear what stops are going to be along the way. I'm traveling with a couple of guys who apparently have a ritual both there and back. I think I'm in for quite a ride, and it even looks like I'll be celebrating birthday #36 in a van somewhere in Nebraska!

I'll be camping at 8:30 and Esplanade, which seems like awesome real estate for a first-timer.
