NEW (orphan) Lady Burner from SF

Post by LyraS » Wed Aug 11, 2010 7:37 pm

Hello! I am so beyond thrilled to be attending my first Burning Man, and also amused by this 95% absolutely crazy whim. I was just able to secure a last-minute ticket, and so far I have no gear, no camp, no ride, and little funds.

Pleased to meet you! :)

Hey there, welcome to eplaya!

Then I realized that the Lord doesn't work that way so I stole one and asked Him to forgive me

Gee, thanks for the welcome! I've spent the full day devouring as much of the website as possible, and I've bookmarked a good amount of outside reading material to last me until the festival itself

Anyone else out there with a solo virgin playa experience who cares to share some words of wisdom? (Thanks for the tips, Elorrum - I'm most excited to get to know others!)

Scorpio, leaping to all sorts of conclusions based on the "md" portion of your name...
If you like the burn and return in '11, you might want to volunteer with the Emergency Services Department.

Welcome to the eplaya!!!

You have a very positive attitude and I think that will contribute to your enjoyment on the playa... At long as you have your food, water and shelter taken care of, everything else is just a experience.

It gets cold sometimes at night (around freezing) so bring warm stuff. It probably will be windy, so bring goggles and something to cover your mouth and nose in the dust. It will be hot & sunny during the day so sun-screen and something to keep your noodle from baking is in order.

Pick somewhere to camp, say hi to your neighbors to see if they are compatible. vola, new friends...

Your are going to have a blast!!!

Love Rice.

Thanks, stretch! I think I'll be setting up camp with my fellow Orphans, so at least some arrangements are (tentatively) in place.

Here's another question: I imagine that the vastness of the festival can be way overwhelming for new burners. I'm planning to just jump right in, but does anyone have thoughts/personal stories/warnings(?) about not overloading oneself too soon? Is this even a reasonable question?

Hiya, scorpio - happy to see another Bay Area virgin. Sending you a PM...

It takes 2 or 3 days for your body/mind/energy to adapt to the environment. Make friends with your neighbors, rest when you need to, start drinking more water now...

There's a thread called "one thing I had known for my first burn . . . "

http://eplaya.burningman.org/viewtopic.php?t=34770

It's right up your alley. In general, there's a lot of great info in the "Q&A Tips and Tricks" forum.

(If you haven't read and memorized the Survival Guide, use the search window on the Burning Man home page.)

Ready for more information?

Phil and Louise have done a marvelous job with their site The Civilized Explorer. It is a burning man encyclopedia of links, stories, photos, you name it really. I should mention it more often. Thank you Phil and Louise!

Also Alternative Energy Zone has good information for first timers, list suggestions, tent and shade ideas.

Both of these sites were great sources of inspiration and information to me as a solo first timer. Dense with practical tips. Many things I do as a matter of course now were first introduced to me by these wonderful burners.

Savannah, I had a lot of fun reading that thread too! Now that you bring it up, I suppose my questions here are more relevant there... but it never hurts to ask around :)

Elorrum, thanks for the extra info - I have read & bookmarked The Civilized Explorer, but didn't know about the 2nd site you mentioned. Will look up now!

("lots of fucking glowsticks" added to list)
