I'm with ya Shaman.
I hope Badger's right about having effective plans in place against these things, because they seem tailor made for teh yahoo "I don't have to obey those stinking rules" bm element. And air pollution is another concern. Those engines are not clean burning and efficient--and we're talking about a mountain basin, so the pollutants will linger. And the prices are low enough that a really determined twit with extra money could walk away from the damn thing say "I'll get two next year."

<Here comes the clue bus>

Um, hello.

Given the amount of carbona released from all the um, BURNING of things during the event cycle pollution is was NOT one of the driving factors for the rule changes.

Um cluebus be damned. I just think of those things as gratuitiuos extra pollution. Finething if Burning Man was Man Standing There Doing Nothing.

Of course, there are those who consider the whole event gratuitious.

and asshole pollution (of the yahoo variety)

Take a break. Put your dick back in your pants.

Why do you have a problem with what I said, scooters are within the rules, shoving rebar in them is not.

Go read the DMV pages on YOUR break.

Hopefully the new policy for mutant vehicle registration will help to abate the problem. If not, look for BRC becoming eligible for Superfund status as far as yahoo/asshats are concerned.

Jeeesus, dude...
I know you hate scooters, but the current rules say you get to ride them, so wrecking someone on a scooter for "fun" is a pretty crappy plan.
Pro-scooter is an unpopular stance on this thread, so be it.

Plonk right back at ya'.
You seem to be looking hard for a fight... we need a "Fight with the Capt." thread. Since I have the unpopular, un-PC take on things so often, there'd be no shortage of material.

Scooters
Scooters (stand-up, one-person “go-peds”) are allowed at Black Rock City.
It isn't clear to me that the type of scooter being dicussed (argued about?) is within the rules. The pictures I have seen are not the stand up kind. Then again, I am not clear on what a "go-ped'" is. Are mopeds and motor scooters allowed under the rules? These types of vehicles are the closest to what is being discussed.

I'm just hoping that serious enforcement of the 5 MPH rule will discourage the scooters and similar things this year.

Now here's a hypothetical question: If someone's coming down the road on a scooter and is moving at like ten or fifteen mph and I just happen to stretch my arms out because my shoulders feel a little tight and they get clotheslined, it's their fault, right? I mean, if they'd been going the speed limit, they wouldn't have run into my arm with their neck.

Nowwwww Kelly.

Bad thought. Bad. BAD.

Passive aggressive behavior is... not the best way to handle these situations.

I will say that the perogative is yours to chide the person in a shrill, condescending manner until they shrivle up into a semi-gelatinous puddle of sputtering guilrt.

Spontaneous, spoken word performance is always a fave art form for me.

And remember to educate! I like to intercept them with a wide grin, ask them technical questions (that a 2-stroke engine? sure sounds like it!), then remind them of the 5 mph speed limit for motorized vehicles. Altough one year I built a jump in front of our camp - lot's of entertainment. Scooters do not jump very well, it seems.

...is that a jump into a burning platform...?!

(I kind of like that idea... I mean, if anyone is foolish enough to actually jump their scooter into a fire.... :P )

good question

Post by theshaman » Mon Jun 28, 2004 1:39 pm

This is a good question Stuart. I have a recumbent that can hit nearly 38 mph if I really push it. Is there a speed limit for bikes?

I always wondered about this. I never push my bike that fast unless I am doing a tour of the art way the hell out on the playa....or running from an approacing duststorm.

Obviously, not many people have a speedometer on thier bike like I do...I always just figured it was the "don't be an asshole" rule of bike speed...I am also not petitioning for a new rule....just wondering

Somene please corect me if I am mistaken, but I believe the speed limit on the playa is 5mph, regardless of what vehicle (car, bike, windbaord, etc.) you are employing.

Since most bikes don't have speedometers you have 2 "rules" to fall back on. 1: Don't contribute to the dust problem. 2: Ride at a reasonable and safe speed.

You won't see Rangers out there with radar guns waiting to write you a ticket. Use your head and you'll don't have to worry about it. You'll know what's reasonable for the space / conditions you find yourself in.
