You need an adult Guardian.

I was 16 last year and I had an adult guardian who was 21+, i will have one again this year as it is apart of the rules.

At 17 you are still under age and a child in the eyes of the law, if something where to happen to you, or if you got in trouble with the law, you would need an adult guardian there.

Please take this into consideration and dont jeopardize the event by attempting to get in without an adult.

I wanted to go around the same time last year (when I was 17), but money and school wasn't on my side so we never made it. I asked a few people your same question and many responses was that if you were in the surrounding area (Reno, Sparks..) you could "hook up" with someone older and they'd pose as your 'gaurdian'. But now that tears brings up the point, it may not be the smartest or most responsible thing to do. But I do sympathize... I mean, honestly everyone, what would you do if you had a ticket and were under age... :? Bummer, but I do hope you get to attend and everything works out safely.

Think about what's responsible. At 17 you are not old enough in the eyes of the law to be responsible for yourself if something happens to you. And if you did get a random person to "vouch for you", you'd be putting them and the event in a position of liability if something went wrong. Do you really want to jeopardize that person's security - or the future of the event?

Maybe there's a parent or aunt or uncle or cousin among your families that might want to attend and help vouch for you. Otherwise, I'd wait until next eyar.

I understand how it is on both sides....

As a teenager, Burning man is like eye candy.

But as an adult, we.. I mean..they need to look out for the well being of the event. Althought you might FEEL old enough, its the law we are all worried about.

IF you stay with a theme camp you MAY be able to get one of them to be your guardian. Last year I attended with a friend, this year i am attending with my guardian who i met last year at the event and is a campmate.

It is a pain being under age i understand, and yes you should have looked into it, but this what you have to work with, but you just need to get your ass in the saddle and make it work..or not.

You can always sell your ticket and look forward to next year.

Just do your best but PLEASE

BE RESPONSIBLE

I am not hard to find.

I camp with the Lamp Lighters

Just ask for me, Tears.

Someone will know where I am. I RARELY slip off into the playa alone without letting someone know where i am headed

Unless it is at night.. lol

DVD, careful buddy. The topic of the next thread maybe "Do you think it's alright that DVD hooks up with a 17 year old?"

It's ok...my answer would be the same as above.

That's not a good question to ask me. :) I grew my first beard at about 14 but by then the miles of sideburns I had were enough to have allowed me two years of buying booze and porn. I sold both, at a mark-up, to other underage kids. So, in all honesty, if it were me and I couldn't find an adult to be my "guardian," then I'd just go anyway and be prepared to bluff/talk my way into the gate, in the unlikely situation that my ID were even asked for.

Not that I'm saying it's a good idea. I did lots of dumb things then that I wouldn't do now. But honestly? At 17 I'd go and I'm sure I'd get in.

I think you would need at the very least a letter from your parents saying it was okay for you to be there and that So-and-So Adult is authorized to be your chaperone/legal guardian for the duration of the event. Also, a phone number to reach them in case there are questions might be helpful.

We may have a 17 year old traveling with us, (doing an age check tonight), and I know this guy is responsible. He just spent 6 months in China by himself studying. So I'm sure his parents will be okay with him traveling with us. However, if he steps on a piece of rebar and needs medical attention, I want to make sure we are legally covered in such a way that he can get treatment and not bleed to death because there is no one there to approve the care.

If it were me, I'd go, no doubt! I'd treat it like pimping liquor. At the gate, find a kind sole, explain your dilema, and see if they'll drive your car in for you. Give them the scoop on what to say or whatever, and BAM! You're in. If it doesn't work the first time, try again later. Your 17, those are prime years to learn your scamming techniques. Those that don't learn it young end up watching a lot of TV.

If you came up to me, I'd do it just for the adventure.

Care

Just to be really clear, I have never heard of this being an issue with the ESD medics. In fact, I believe that anyone under 18 would be automatically covered by "implied consent" whether or not parents or legal guardian were there. Now, without a letter from his parents you might not be allowed any information such as--what hospital was he evacuated to and can you visit and facilitate and talk to doctors and hospital staff, but he wouldn't die. It would just mean that there would be no one to make interum dicisions while his parents are being tracked down and are getting to Reno or whereever. Based on the fact that S1 was taken to Reno on the Thursday after the event in 2002 and niether I nor his family was contacted until the Sunday after that that could be a long, scary time of knowing nothing. (Although, you'd hopefully have an inkling that he'd been injured and you could let parents know and they could do cold calling of clinics--I had no idea what was going on until the social worker called beause I'd left the playa the day previous.)

So it sounds like the issue is resolved....just ask jbelson to be your guardian for the event!!!!! He said he'd welcome the adventure!

[Said with the best maternal voice I can muster]....If you do come to the event, by hook or by crook, have the courtesy to read past ePlaya threads so you know what to bring to the event to survive (and have a safe/fun time). Surviving in the desert is not an easy or cheap proposition, particularly if you are trying to do it alone. And while gifting is the principle of the event, don't expect people to take pity on you if you get into trouble cause by you came unprepared.

if you wanna be a big dog, you gotta work and play like the big dogs, otherwise stay off the porch. ;-)
Details are my krill.
