the right time to leave the playa?
Hey guys, Despite being a 4 year veteran, this will be my first time witnessing the man burn (i hope)... If i have a flight leaving Reno @ noon on the 5th, will i be able to safely drive my car away at say, 5-6 am without a traffic jam? Your insight is appreciated! :)

ok, if you have a flight that you MUST make, then you have to take certain measures to get there. #1: break down your entire camp and be ready to leave BEFORE the burn. BEFORE the burn.
BEFORE the burn. Get it? BEFORE THE BURN. You WILL NOT SUCCESSFULLY BREAK CAMP AT 3 AM AFTER THE BURN. NO POSSIBLE WAY.
If you try, you will either fail, or basically leave a bunch of moop everywhere for everyone else to pick up after.
so, set it up such that you could see the man burn, and then go straight to your car and drive off without any extra effort. Don't do that, however. There is an initial rush of people who watch the burn and then leave, and you'll want to give them some time to clear out before you go.
good luck and godspeed

I think you have good reason to be in that line of cars trying to get out of the gate right after the burn.
Sitting around your camp and "giv[ing] them some time to clear out before you go" is really just the same as choosing to be and the end of the line.
Also, the line won't really be that bad. Nothing like the hour(s) long waits on Sunday and Monday. Plus the new Pulse system for exodus means that you don't have to creep along, you just wait in the queue and then drive full normal speed.
Good Luck!

Leave about 2-3 am. Everyone else is either partying or sleeping. Open roads...

Have you ever boarded a ferry or been in some other situation where cars needed to be staged before they all went on one road?
Gate is going to try changing the system this year so that traffic is stopped in lanes near the gate and then each lane goes, in turn, at normal speed.
No more creeping, no more overheated cars, no more nightmare merging. Instead you approach gate at normal speed, stop in the lane you are directed to, and turn off your engine until it is time for your lane to exit at normal speed.
Takes more people to run the lanes, but it is supposed to be faster overall compared to the previous system. Even if it is not faster, the "two hour" Exodus of the past will be mostly spent waiting in the exit area with the engine off. Take a nap or something.

In a nutshell, same amount of time to get off playa, but you're either driving normal speed when your area is "released" or you're sitting with the engine off as vs the old situation of creeping along at 0.25mph with the engine overheating.

I don't agree with Token. If you leave camp at Midnight, get stuck in a short line for maybe an hour, and then drive to Reno, you will be there well before 5 am.Token wrote:I voted No without reading the post and I gotta say ...
Unless its Soutwest Airlines, you be fucked!
Basically, allow a drive time of 3.5 hours (to be safe) and a wait time of an hour. Give yourself an hour and a half at the airport to deal with car and luggage. Figure out your leaving time from that.
Since you were considering leaving the city at 5am, I assume your flight was probably after 8am. You might just want to leave at midnight so you can nap at the airport, but it's up to you.

In theory. I'm betting the line jumpers will still the same old shit. Do we get guns? Maybe "asshole" flags via dart guns?capjbadger wrote:In a nutshell, same amount of time to get off playa, but you're either driving normal speed when your area is "released" or you're sitting with the engine off as vs the old situation of creeping along at 0.25mph with the engine overheating.

You get those new microwave gun the cops have to disable a engine and spike strips for the older cars that don't have enough computers in them for the MW guns to work on.AntiM wrote:In theory. Perhaps.
That's why they need to coordinate with the Sheriff to have a car sitting at the point that each lane starts moving. Hard to be discrete when you are the only car moving. Or you are coming down an empty lane. Or you run over the Exodus staffer standing at the back of the only lane in motion.

It's one time that almost all of us would like to see some LE super active: nailing those asshats who jump lines!AntiM wrote:

What violation could they write a ticket for?
Could said asshats be held for 24 hours in a temp jail and car impounded with normal $$$ fines to un-impound it?

I'm sure if they wanted to they could write various moving violation tickets.DoctorIknow wrote:It's one time that almost all of us would like to see some LE super active: nailing those asshats who jump lines!AntiM wrote:

Seriously, hope for the best, plan for the worst. It's one lane for a long ways and it only takes one broken down car to gum up the works...worldthreat wrote:I like cap badge's idea.
