Playa mobility for the immobile
So, 12 days before I'm supposed to board a flight to Reno, I have a stroke of genius. I just blew the f out of my knee wakeskating, and can barely walk. It looks like a grapefruit, and you can't even tell I have a knee cap. Joy.
It looks like I may not be able to walk too well.. hobble, stand in one place, bob my head to the ambient music.. but walk.. not so much.
WTF am I going to do? Seriously. Friends say hitch rides with art cars.. how?
Help.

Perhaps ask Wayne at the Black Rock City Department of Mobility (see this thread):

1. Go see a doctor.
2. Absent point 1, ice the mofo, 10 minutes on, two hours off. Repeat.
3. Anti-inflammatory drugs. Aleve (Naproxen Sodium), aspirin, or advil, in order of effectiveness.
Stay off the leg.
Bring those chemical ice packs to the playa.

You could start looking at thrift stores and garage sales for wheelchairs and crutches.
Theoretically, scooters should be available because they are basically free to the original owners and the original owners are old enough to not use them for very long. However, I have not figured out where they go afterwards. Maybe they are still too rare and get snapped up by relatives. And you'd have generator and transport issues.

i feel you, my knee still isnt healing right. Any weight on it and it hurts. even just standing on solely it gets a nice "NO". I can walk though. Just have to wear a brace. Don't know if you can brace yours well enough for the playa. I have looked into rolling backpacks as well, but I am very uncertain that the wheels will work on th eplaya. What I can tell you though. Advil, stay off it as much as possible and try to massage it to relieve muscle aches.
Hope it helps.

I've been dealing with knee pain since I played football.
In addition to the above, I would recommend a serious knee brace. The thick neoprene kind with lots of criss crossy support strapping and re-enforced support on the sides.

Yeah I've got a nice DonJoy one that I'm on now. I actually did this but 5 times worse last summer.. tore my meniscus, ripped and strained muscle, stretched tendons. All in one fail swoop. I literally took a year to heal up with lots of self rehab and exercise. I was back to 98% before I did this on Sunday.CapSmashy wrote:Pretty much this.Token wrote:1. Go see a doctor.

Luckily, I can tell that it's not NEARLY as bad as the first one. I feel like I mainly strained all the muscles around it. The pain is mainly topical and around it with stiff muscles instead of shooting inside the knee like it was before and not being able to bear even a pound of weight on it. Just feels hella stiff. I can put weight on it, but bending not so much. No health insurance, so I have to take care of myself. It will be ok.. just how long is the question. I think I'll be alright, just taking it slow and easy as I bike at the burn. Please dear un-named deity... help me.

Thank you so much! What camp? I'll put it in my playa notebook. PM if you want.Dr Helix wrote:Hey I'm at 7:30 and D and have a small car with an open back area. I'll swing by on occasion and if you need a lift, I'll be happy to provide.
Also.. just a note that I read this morning: If you injure muscles or tendons, DO NOT TAKE NSAIDs! They actually inhibit the body's natural repair mechanisms. Check out these studies:
