What are some fun ways to get more involved through volunteering on the playa?

It might be a bit late to 'formally' volunteer through the normal sign-up process and actually schedule your times. However, you can just choose something you'd like to do and then just go and ask if they need help--in most cases you can get a shift. Some of the fun things I like to do are Ice Camp, Greeters, Lamp Lighters, Bus Depot and I'm sure there are others. Most of those I've mentioned you can usually sign-up for right on the playa.

When I was a kid I used to pray every night for a new bicycle.
Then I realized that the Lord doesn't work that way so I stole one and asked Him to forgive me

I emailed the folks in charge of the ice trucks several times, but haven't heard back, so I ended up volunteering at the Reno Airport to greet those arriving by plane. Stop by and say hi!
Good to know that you can volunteer once you're on the playa - I won't be sad to spend a few hours in the chilled atmosphere at the ice trucks!

Go to a project you like and help during breakdown.
Almost everyone needs all the help they can get then.
You can volunteer in a dozen different places if you like.
You won't get as much credit from each one.
Some might even think you're being lazy.
But it's much more fun, and you can be more useful too.

Volunteer jobs - a review
I personally love working Gate, but it's not for everyone. But let me break down my observations associating with volunteer groups over the last decade.
No pre-event prep
Cafe: fun crowd, free drinks, easy to get to, easy to join mid-week. Possibility of tips. Cashiers do not need food handler's license (others may)
Lamplighters: be part of a long running ritual, day or sunset shifts, joining mid-week expected, have to carry stuff for a walk down half the Esplanade.
Playa Info: help confused people, easy to join mid-week, chaotic and hard to predict what is expected of you.
Arctica: Cool job (pun intended), have to schedule shifts at beginning of the week due to popularity.
Exodus: many jobs do not require pre-playa training, very easy to join at last minute, good gifts from people leaving city.
Pre-playa prep needed
Temple Guardians: guide participants through experience (requires sensitive nature), pre-event sign-up, may have training (I'm not sure)
Rangers/Gate/Perimeter/ESD/DPW: Departments to suit every temperament and job preference. All require pre-playa sign up and training. Some require specific real-life skills. Not every department is suitable to every person due to the matching of personality and management style. (Nor should they be!)
There are others, but these are the ones I am familiar with.
