Tent as Carry-On?

Does anyone have any experience of brining a tent on an plane as carry on baggage?

Would the poles/pins be considered a weapon?

Its a continentail flight in particular.

I think the biggest question would be the dimensional problem.

"Continental will permit one bag plus one personal item (see below), per customer to be carried on the aircraft.

The maximum combined linear measurement (L + W + H) of the carry-on bag is 45 inches (115 cm)up to 14 in x 9 in x 22 in. The maximum weight of the carry-on bag is 40 pounds (18 kg)."

Are those tent poles less than 22"?

As long as it fits the size, it should be fine. You can review all the lists of TSA-prohibited items on their website.

I think it should be ok for size, the whole setup folds up small enough.

Yeah, I've been a bit rabid checking and re-checking. I don't want to risk missing any connections or trouble with TSA.

I know it sounds trivial, but I would tape the pins all together and wrap them up inside the tent itself just to make it clear that you aren't trying to get access to them or la la la. Just make it look as clear as possible that it's just.. a tent... guys..

Many flights in the US do a door check for bigger carry on bags or larger items such as strollers. It rides as checked baggage, you don't have to stow it in the overhead, and for now it is free. I don't know if this option is available to you, but you could ask?

That's how I used to travel with my guitar, but it usually pissed people off, and that was pre-9/11. They might also charge a fee - and depending on the planes, what works on one might not work on the next one.

I'm really just very unsure between all the new regulations and luck-of-the-draw, what to expect (my mom and I were allowed knitting needles, once). So, I'm keeping it as simple and trouble-free as possible.

If i get past security with it i think it should be ok, its only about 2 foot long, maybe half a foot wide, smaller than alot of peoples carry on hard suitcases.

i might be able to fit it into my check in bag I was just exploring my options

LOL, just don't try to get past security wearing a utilikilt... too many snaps setting off the wands. MyLarry freaked the TSA folks out with the offer to remove it.

Put your tent into your main bag and put the clothes it dispaces into your carry on. Thats what we're doing.
I rang BA and they said it wan't allowed as a carry on. There is too much metal. Will the tent have pegs. are they sharp?

I know our airport has a basket right at check-in, and if your carry-on doesn't fit, you have to check it.

I love this new trend, actually. Now that so many people bring carry ons, the bins always fill up quickly and they appreciate it if you ask if they want to check it right when you get on. If I'm doing connecting flights and I'm not pressed for time, then by all means.. check my bag for free! In fact.. I anticipate it now..

You can also remove the poles/stakes from the tent bag and pack them underneath and put other stuff in the tent bag and carry it on with you.

It's the small sledge hammer at the bottom of my tent bag that freaks them out the most. And of course the old playa dust sets off the chemical alarms.

Um. You don't have to mess with the Continental page.
Security is run by the Travel Security Agency, and they have the specs on the internet. Their url is likely tsa.gov
