Question for the Roaming Incense Project

Post by Merman » Mon Jun 28, 2004 11:09 am

Are detailed maps of Black Rock available to help a project? Let me explain why I am asking.

This year my gift to Burningman will be Botanical Incense - In particular dedication and or functional burns for “special spaces.”

Most people's reaction to that statement is, "huh? okay, whatever." But hold that thought for just a moment while I explain.

For several years now I've been studying and collecting raw botanical scent based ingredients. I have and use a collection of approximately 70 different kinds of roots, seeds, berries, resins, leaves, and woods. When I talk about incense I mean the heating or burning of raw botanicals. I burn nothing except materials which have come straight out of the earth. What’s more I only burn them while in their natural forms. Truth is, drying, slicing, and grinding are the only processing I allow in my incense. Basically we’re talking about the burning of dried or cured botanical elements. It’s about as pure as can be produced.

I have also spent a significant amount of my time researching the various uses of these botanicals. Incense, in this traditional sense is an ancient and nearly lost practice. A large chunk of my life is being dedicated to reviving these approaches and their powerful uses and benefits.

That’s what I mean when I say “incense.” To give my Gift, I will be wandering Black Rock City offering burns for dedicated spaces, theme camps, and temples. The burns will be done in the Kodo style. In particular I will do Makko based incense trail. These burns will be augmented with a variety of incense from my collection. The specific ingredients used will vary depending on the needs and purposes of the space.

Okay, long explanation for a simple question.

One of the things that would help me in my project would be an accurate and fairly detailed map of the city. The maps which are usually handed out at the gate are good but not as detailed as would be useful to my project.

Sooooooo . . . . drum roll please . . .

How would I go about requesting a more detailed map? Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Well, yes and exactly my point.

I did see this post earlier. Seeing the maps made me very happy. I got all goofy seeing the city laid out (a lot like 1999).

However, it doesn’t provide placement of specific villages and theme camps. All it shows is the general areas set aside for Theme camps. I'm hoping to have something a bit more detailed.

Placements haven't even been announced to the theme camps yet, so there likely won't be a map until after that.

An idea: You could start making alist and/or contacting camps/art installions from the pages on the website of places that might be appropriate. Then, when placement is announced, it would be easy to look those camps/installations up.

Ivy - this is a good suggestion.

I have toyed with the idea of making a list but I've waffled on the subject. On the one hand I want to be prepared. On the other hand I don't want to build an itinerary. I am already receiving requests from camps - "come dedicate our space" - kinds of requests. That's a good thing and gets me jazzed.

Odds are I'll build a list, but once I get on the playa it will be set aside, to allow for the randomness of exploration and impromptu connections.

But - good idea. Thanks

As always, and well it should be. Don't forget, the street goes both way, too--even if you made a list, checked it twice and set out to find thsoe camps, some of them won't end up being there.

Good luck with your project!
