This Burning Man thing that you do.. I don't understand it!
..was the quote from the girlfriend last night.
*sigh*
Ever get the feeling that about this time of year that it becomes obvious who co-exists on your planet and who doesn't?

I am fortunate to some extent because I no longer have a spouse to worry about. Though she would have thought I was crazy and said she'd go out of fear I would be hurt. Then, would have fallen in love with the place.
My cat on the other hand, is freaking out. He needs his mommy time and he knows when boxes or suitcases come out I am leaving and he doesn't like it.
Gawd I miss my wife.

ya our 4 are pretty much losing their minds watching all the shit I'm packing... we've got friends coming in for the time we're gone... and added at least a pet door to the garage so that they can go out there (they love it out there) - if I didn't my stripey cat would be just flat out nutty by the time we got back...we're hoping to stave off some of that. LOL

you don't have to everything with your spouse. BM is not for everyone. My wife used to go to bars with friends, and I would go out with my friends dancing. I loved museums and art and she loved movies. And that was ok. We had things in common but never forced our preferences on each other.

I can relate...I thought they were a stupid idea too. But force him to sit on the bell. (If they let you do that anymore.) because he'll regret not having done some virgin welcoming ritual eventually.MistressSybs wrote:I'm pretty blessed... my hubby is pretty much down for damn near anything I'm down for... except *gasp* he doesn't want to do virgin dust angels!!!

When I was a kid I used to pray every night for a new bicycle.
Then I realized that the Lord doesn't work that way so I stole one and asked Him to forgive me

sure, i respect non-codependent relationships. movies and bars is one thing but BM for me is the equivalent of saying "going to Europe for a week, SEE YA!"FaeTora wrote:you don't have to everything with your spouse. My other favorite mini exchange was the night that I told her that I was going..
Me: So um.. it looks like I'm going to Burning Man this year..
Her: What?! So you're going to the middle of the desert to take a bunch of drugs and go crazy??
Me: Nononono! It's not about drugs! It's all about the art! I mean.. sure.. there might be people doing those things there, but that doesn't mean that >>I<< will, honey.. It's about the art
(trying to keep a straight face at this point)

It's one thing if she doesn't "get it." But, if she doesn't get it or understand why you're leaving her, and is worried about what all you're doing...there's the trouble.junglesmacks wrote:Only half kidding. Plenty of more serious threads on the topic to peruse, should you ever need to.
Having seen couples (including myself) start off at mild odds and then later go seperate ways over something so seemingly small...I'm always in favour of honesty and communiction from the get-to, to curtail future problems.

No.. I gotcha. She knows, and thinks it's kinda sorta cool.. but is just.. on another level. It's true. Good, sweet, 9-5'er corporate type that locks all the doors behind her and is semi-scared of "those people". You know the type. It's cool. Works most of the year, but it's just interesting how when things like this come around.. the differences become glaring.C.f.M. wrote:It's one thing if she doesn't "get it." My boyfriend has never gone, if he has his way he never will. Doesn't like camping, or dirt. He does, however, completely understand my need to go, and when my job wouldn't let me attend the last two years he was as pissed at them as I was. A relationship is built on more than just time together.Homiesinheaven wrote:i dont understand how many people have spouses or significant others who never attend year after year. cant imagine not sharing that experience at least once with someone i'm in love with.
Would I love him to experience it- ....sorta. I know he would like the art and the event (and the boys), but I know his discomfort with the crowds & dirt would overshadow any fun he would have. I'm not so self-centered that I would force him to go.
As for my wife- she just served a year in Iraq. She couldn't get paid enough to go to the desert. She would also want to shoot things (hippies), so Juplaya might be more for her.
It's a camping trip in the desert, not the redemption of the fallen world - Cryptofishist

Most of my friends and family don't understand why I go but know its something I want to do and because I love and support them even if I don't understand or agree, they do the same for me.
My older sister often asks hows my camping trip plans going. "Good, cross your fingers." "Just come home safe."
The reality is regardless of who you are or what relationship you have (friendship, girlfriend, spouse, etc), its communication, trust, and letting that person be and become whoever they are supposed to be. You should always be like two pillars church, strong and united, but never standing so close for the roof to collapse.

my gf has a pretty good attitude about me going without her, though it probably doesn't hurt she went to SXSW alone this past year and I didn't hassle her. she's also used to rolling her eyes at my various manchild hijinks.
in this case, she said "i don't think you'll wrong me, but you're wearing rubbers for 6 months after you get back just in case", LOL.
she is mildly interested in BM, but doesn't think she'd be compatible with the environment. Plus, she only gets 2 weeks off, and one of those will be for our family vacation, the other week will be for SXSW or some other music-blog friendly destination.
