Diesel Along the Way
Diesel Along the Way
I'm going to be checking to be sure, but I'm driving my diesel VW down to the playa this year. Are there good places to fill up before getting out onto the playa?
@phil Good point, here's the route. Leaving a few days earlier than necessary so that I can reach maximum meander on the way there and arrive in the correct state of mind.
@Token It’s a vanagon so my average is a little reduced (~30 MPG), but I have a large-ish tank so my range is still pretty impressive. I’d still like to roll out on the playa with a nearly full tank if at all possible since this will help protect the fuel system and will make exodus a lot easier.

i've driven the route you have mapped a few times, but I don't drive a diesel... so i doubt I can be of much assistance. I know there is a gas station is cedarville, that will be your last chance for fuel, but i doubt they have diesel. It's just a 2 pump operation. You may get lucky in alturas, there is a larger station that stays open 24 hours around burn time, but again I don't know for sure if there is diesel.
try asking Gwally : http://gwally.com/directions/000402.php
or send a message to the BCWA regional e-mail list, i bet someone will know for sure there: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/burningman-bcwa/

That truck stop in La Pine is called "Gordys". I got a coffee cup from there when I drove flatbed.
Theres an RV park/campground in Lakeview that has biodiesel, if your van can run it. I use it in my 03 Jetta regularly.
Don't forget, Oregon is stricktly full serve.
What year is your Vanagon?

I checked on the interweb but could find nothing about diesel in Cedarville, the Lakeview chevron has the cheapest diesel in the area. Coming down from Lakeview, Fandango Pass is an interesting gravel road over the Warner Mountains. Stop in Cedarville, it is a very friendly and burner friendly community.

It's pretty much been said. Yes, there's diesel in Alturas. Don't know about Cedarville, except that it's swell, even in the middle of the night. A worthwhile place to stop, and check out the book store. It's 106 miles from Alturas to Gerlach. You'd only be down a few gallons. And you could avoid Gerlach altogether, if you wanted.
