Recovering from WoW

Post by Pink Daddy » Mon Aug 23, 2010 7:38 am

Ok, so this past year, I had some bouts with some serious depression. Some of it revolving around some deaths (my grandmother, Peter Steele from Type O Negative, The Rev from Avenged Sevenfold) and dealing with the fact that I really hate my job. So, I sunk into a major World of Warcraft addiction.

Early last month, I finally broke my hold from WoW. It was the same time that I had a septoplasty/turbinate reduction surgery and I received the funds in the mail to pay for my trip to the playa this year. Ever since then I've been knee deep in Burning Man preps.

The funny thing, a bunch of the friends that I played with, now want to attend Burning Man next year. We might have to make a special camp for it, like Warcraft Anonymous or Horde Expeditionary Camp.

Do they have chips for that?

But seriously, glad things are looking up for you.

I could make some chips. I think they have custom poker chips or coins you can get made. Hmm, the wheels are turning now...

I played wow a lot over the past few years. I wouldn't call it addictive. I tend to play four about 3 months, and then get bored/angry about something and decide to cancel my account. (If I'm bored, obviously. If I'm angry I take that as a sign of bad game design that other players can make me unhappy.)

I became seriously addicted to Second Life about a year ago. Playing for days on end for over 20 hours per day. Then a series of events made me take a hard look at myself and SL. I changed the way I played and ever since its been easy. I play for a few hours per week now, sometimes going for days without showing up.

I've been known to sip the Sailor Jerry's on the rocks and hit up some Battlefield 2 on the big screen for a couple of hours a day, but I wouldn't call it an addiction. The day is too damn nice outside to sit inside that much. Try an outdoor hobby like surfing or skateboarding at a skatepark..

So which one of you fuckers stoled my debit card # and spent over $300 on Blizzard.com?

No,,, really it was a WoW guy cuz the dumb shit used my card ELEVEN times on the same website on the same day, and made it kinda suspicious activity to the banking police.

Hopefully my new card will arrive this week!

Sounds like a gold farmer. In some video games, Warcraft included, online currency is tradable for real currency. You might wonder why someone would want to pay for in-game currency, well there are many things in the game that require a lot of gold. The best flying mount in the game costs 5,000g. The amount of time it takes to get that much gold is a long time, for most people. Every time someone gets a new piece of gear, they have to re-gem (200g-500g) and re-enchant it (200g-600g). So, you can see how money flies quickly.

Companies have made a considerable profit from selling in game currency. So much, that some rely on non-trustworthy methods of getting gold. They try to hack or phish people's account. When they gain access, they sell all of their equipment and literally leave the characters naked. Blizzard has attempted to monitor large gold transactions, which requires the companies to frequently spend money on new accounts, because previous ones being banned. That's probably where the $300 bucks were spent, to activate numerous gold farming accounts.

For someone trying to buck the addiction the favorable discussion seems to be plentiful here. Kinda like an person in AA pining about how to make the best Manhattan.

I played WOW for over 2 years .
Its actually a pretty spectacular game . The graphics are so emersive.
It is a very social game as well.I met my ex girlfriend on WOW.

The big problem is that you realize your not being social at all . I live less than a mile from the beach and I stopped going .

It was fun but I dont miss it at all .

Surfs up dude!

PS An ex wow camp would be a hoot !

I finally quit, but only after getting banned for selling gold for 300 bucks. week before finishing my Shadowmourne too, lols, Im glad it got banned. I do wish I would have sold it for $3k instead of getting banned.
