Now THAT should not be allowed at the event. If there were no internet service at the event, I wouldn't be able to go. So, if there is service, and somebody is malicious enough to block it, that is just sad. And yes it would be an act of malice.Kinetic V wrote:I've heard there's a camp planning to try out cell phone and wifi jammers on the playa. When I was a kid I used to pray every night for a new bicycle.
Then I realized that the Lord doesn't work that way so I stole one and asked Him to forgive me

Seems to me, one of the big reason to go way the eff out in the effin desert for a week, is to get a-effing-away from all the telephones and crap that clutters out daily lives.
I remember after my first year, I told anybody and everybody I could hold still long enough to hear it that Burning Man was my FIRST real VACATION in my 54 years on this crazy planet.
Having a week off from work is not a vacation. But never even once thinking about work for a week -- now that's a vacation!

Webcams and such. Interactivity.
I truely appreciate the sentiment. However wifi would give me another opportunity to contribute taking advantage of the resource of the metro cyber enviroment, or I could just leave this additional art project at home.Isotopia wrote:We'll be all be waiting to see what the fuck you have planned rather than an expectation that someone else will be doing it for your convenience. Is somebody going to put this up again this year?

Unfortunately, that's one luxury I don't have. But, as long as I'm connected, I can pretty much can go anywhere, anytime; and connecting to check up on things isn't that big of a sacrifice for the freedom it provides.Elliot wrote:Seems to me, one of the big reason to go way the eff out in the effin desert for a week, is to get a-effing-away from all the telephones and crap that clutters out daily lives.

Actually if they're jamming you'd be getting plety of strong and meaningless signal. Lots of FCC prohabitions against this one too.Kinetic V wrote:I've heard there's a camp planning to try out cell phone and wifi jammers on the playa. Yeah, you would get a great signal that gets you nowhere. That's true. But as for the jammer...being in telecom for so long I know jammers exist. Seen some first hand. As for if such devices were to ever be tested in the wild remains to be seen. But there's a few people who have the legal authority to make and test 'em and some of those people love Burning Man....mthyer wrote:Actually if they're jamming you'd be getting plety of strong and meaningless signal. Take those facts, add in a little creative license...you get the above post. It made a few people smile...mission accomplished.
Moving on...the playa has been a great place to experiment with antennas and repeaters. Having someone with an Extra Class amateur radio license to teach me has been wonderful.
