Communication Help

Post by wapinitia » Wed Aug 25, 2010 1:57 pm

Dear Neighbors,

I need WIFI access to send and receive email (just email nothing more) from my family who lives in rural Central Oregon. We have been battling wildfire from our home. All is well for know but I would sure like to keep in touch with them, while I am lucky enough to be a citizen of Black Rock City. I plan to camp around 3 o'clock near the walk- in camping. I am more than happy to stand in line for ice, do dishes, sing poorly constructed sea shantys. Have bike will travel.

I am pretty sure that the Marriott Courtyard in Reno has WiFi!

If you are at the walk-in camping area, you will not have a chance in hell of having a signal. If you are up around C Street, you have a chance to get a signal. It is hit or miss, but bring your computer on downtown and give it a try.

best place to try is near Center Camp.

If you absolutely need to be in touch (which it sounds like you do), your best bet is renting a satellite phone. Nothing else is going to guarantee you a connection. There's a thread on them here somewhere.

One year I was able to get a wifi connection once- and it lasted about 5 minutes. It's not something I would count on.

Other than that.... well, like Sham said, there's always Reno.... :(

my sister was due with triplets in 08 and i took my comp cause it was a rislky birth and i was super worried. i took it to center camp on wed morning to check and it took a good hour but i got through to my email, and i got to see the three most beautiful babies on the planet. i was crying and one woman came up and asked me if i was ok. i showed her the pictures with tears streaming down my eyes and said they are so beautiful. she hugged me, and it was the best moment i have had on the playa in five years! the reception is spotty at best but you can get through if you are diligent
