Astronomers!
Are there going to be any amateur astronomers at Burning Man this year? I see a Stars By The Ton camp...but no placement info.
I'm just bringing a star chart. Thought it would be fun to search for constellations, galaxies, etc.
There's no moon during the week, so the sky should be brilliant with stars!

Friends of Black Rock Desert/High Rock Canyon offer a fine star finder. It's on their website. I'll be bringing mine.
There's a guy that comes to Rendezvous at the Black Rock who has a huge telescope. You can see the rings of Saturn and moons. Don't know if he burns, but that is and would be great out there.
In the mean time, there's a star chart...

This is fun.
1. Go to this site:
http://www.heavens-above.com/
2. Log in with these coordinates:
40.6520° N, 119.3540° W
3. Find out when the really bright visibles such as ISS, Iridium flares and other satellites will be visible.
4. Point to the sky and yell "LOOK! A UFO!"
People will figure it out pretty quick, but not soon enough to prevent a rush of wonderment.

It's too much to ask, but wouldn't it be fun to organize one night of group stargazing...*fingers point at me*...
OK...Tuesday night, 9 PM, right hand end of the espresso bar at Center Camp. That way, if no one shows you've got instant entertainment!
If someone's got a telescope too difficult to move, we could meet there...wherever there is.

I have a pair of Parks 11x80 binoculars...kinda reluctant to bring them though....the dust etc.
I did see some, and I repeat some, Percede meteors a few weeks ago from my backyard, and found the Andromeda galaxy with said binoculars.
Cool shirt there Shambala

I brought my 8" sct two years (2007-2008) and the dust makes it very much a "middle of a big city" experience, or worse. You can see better stars with the naked eye than a big city, but scopes just get the dust. If you could get it up on a 20'-30' platform, maybe better. All in all though, the sidewalk astronomy is a hit with lots of folks. Jupiter, Uranus are close to each other. Saturn is hanging out by the sun, so bummer.
Tues. 9pm. Awesome, I will bring my iPad with the star walk app to pass around. Thankfully it just uses gps so it will work great. I also hope to do some astro photography!! Does anyone have a Dslr adapter for a telescope they are bringing?
Good to see there are other people with their eyes on the sky :)
Cheers

OK...where was everyone? See how Burning Man plans just go to hell!
Myself, you ask? I was on my way but got sidetracked by an awesome theme camp and their bar!
But for sure let's do it this year! Time/place TBD...

I know someone who has a 20" Dobsonian... it was so tall he needed a ladder to get to the eyepiece. He looks for the darkest skies possible (BM probably has too much light pollution) and is very concerned about corrosives on his mirror (would playa dust be a problem?).dragonpilot wrote:OK...where was everyone? Bringing 12" Dobsonian Telescope
I'll be bringing my large scope for planet and nebula viewing. Being virgins this year, I was planning on gifting some Stargazing to anyone interested. We aren't yet a member of any camp, and would be interested in working with anyone of a similar mind. I'll be coming from the Medford Oregon area.

That would be awesome. I've always been interested in astronomy, but don't own a telescope. My 4 year old is getting me back in touch with my inner-space nerd self.
I'll keep an eye on this thread in case there is a meet up.
