My First Time Away From Home

Post by RyliFynn » Fri Aug 20, 2010 12:22 am

I am 18 I will be 19 pretty soon and I chose my first real away from home experience to be BM. I wont be going this year but next year I will. I plan on going alone and I was wondering if anyone had any advice. I am so excited to explore all the things BM has to offer! Me being a young girl ready to experience new things and people I can't wait to go.

Welcome. You should take the next year to try to meet up with some local people who will be heading out to Black Rock City. It will make things much easier and safer for you.
Start reading up now and search yard sales and thrift stores for things you can use.
See you in a year!

Dang! Whatever happened to summer camp?

ETA: That was pretty rude of me.
Sorry.

start saving money

Post by epic » Wed Aug 25, 2010 11:39 pm

First off, start saving money to afford to buy all the stuff you'll need, your ticket and transportation to get there. It ain't cheap and you don't want to not be able to go for lack of funds. Then connect with Burners in your local area or region to talk to, go to events and maybe carpool to BM with. You can find them on Eplaya and the BM website. You want to plan the time off school and work and travel plans at least 3 months in advance.

I only made a decision to go to Metropolis about 3 months ago. It's been hard planning and acquiring things I need. It's definately an adventure that need time to plan for. It's good you're starting now.

Ryli- a few things:

1) It's going to get real quiet on the eplaya in the next few days as most of us start heading to the physical playa. You might want to hold off questions until we get back after Labor Day. You'll also start seeing a lot of feedback then about this year that will help get your excitement up for next year.

2) Follow BMIR radio online (click the "listen here" box) for live updates from the playa. It's active now. You can also check the main page for the webcam of the event. I don't have that link on me.

3)the Bad news- you'll still be a minor next year. You won't be able to drink at the bar camps. Please don't try to. The camps can get fined, and potentially shut down, for serving minors. Best to save the partying part of your Burning Man adventure for when you're over 21. (lord, I sound like my parents...)

Go to the booby bar. Seriously, fine people who will look after you.
Leave your name in the book.

But will hustle you out of the physical bar at once. We don't mind under-agers, but not in the big boob. And the juxtaposition of Eric's post and then yours could be interpreted as our giving out booze to underage drinkers, and I don't appreciate that inference being drawn, no matter how unintended.

go for it

Post by epic » Fri Aug 27, 2010 12:24 am

If you can save the $500-$1,000 and make it across country with all your stuff in your car, go for it. It might be easier sharing a big vehicle and costs with others coming from your area. Then you could share driving and make faster time. You could fly to Reno and then drive, but it would be pricey and hard to get all your stuff to the playa at the same time you arrive. Buy the ticket the first week they go on sale. Just please don't try to sponge a free ticket or free whatever unless you work for it. Folks might offer all kinds of "free" stuff to a young solo female but there will be strings attached.
You can have a good time alone, and sober at BM. Contrary to popular opinion, despite there being lots of bars there not everyone partakes in alchohol and or drugs.
