Seeds and Planting

Post by fernsie » Thu Aug 26, 2010 9:04 pm

I'm new to Burning Man and know that living plants are not allowed on the playa and I'm guessing that's a BLM regulation to preserve the ecosystem, which is fine.

I'm curious if there would be a problem with planting seeds in containers while at Burning Man. None of them would start to sprout during the event but I thought it would be cool for them to get their start on the playa. I figure that people are allowed to bring fruits, veggies, and sunflower seeds so mixing them with dirt and water in a container should be OK but thought I'd throw it out there for opinions.

Thanks!

No. There isn't much of an ecosystem out there, and I suspect that any greenery that was left there would become microbe food.
However, burningman is a Leave No Trace event. And post-burn you have dozens of volenteers picking up what people dropped and didn't notice or didn't care to pick up. Down to things like glass shard and pieces of glitter. Dirt would be MOOPy (Materieal Out of Place.) And people would have to clean it up.
And it's a brutal environment. The things that do live out there are called "extreamophiles." Because that's what it takes to live out there. Trying to get some plants to start out there would not be kind to them.

If you have a pot and soil and seeds when you come in and you leave with a potted plant and NO MOOP, and you're not fucking with someone else's trip, then who's going to bother you? It's not a plutocratic dictatorship out there. Read your principles.
