iphone app with searchable event database
Hey folks,
I have an iPhone app in the store called "Time To Burn". I submitted an update last week that includes the entire set of on-playa events (over 1,000) and lets you search and sort in various ways.
The udpate is being reviewed by Apple right now. Hopefully the update will go live today or tomorrow.
I don't recommend you use any phone on the playa, but if you want to pass the time on the drive up browsing the events then download the app now and wait for the update.
Can't wait to go home -- it's my 10 year burner anniversary!

Edana,
I have tested it on iPhones & iPads, but I don't have an iTouch, so I can't guarantee it. It is compatible with OS 3 and iOS 4 -- if you can run other apps, then it should work.
The app is free -- how could I possibly do anything but gift this to other burners? ;p
But about that finger with habanero sauce...that could be fun!

Also, someone asked if it would work even without cell coverage.
The update contains the entire event database LOCALLY. No connectivity is required once the update is installed.
In other words, you would be able to find "all events that mention Mojito on Tuesday" while on playa, even with your phone in airplane mode.

I've had this app on my main page for a while now... And keep referring to it to instill a little panic at how little time I have and how much prep I have to do! :)
Fortunately, I'm mostly caught up now, just final packing... But thanks for the app, it's great! Looking forward to the update.
And I have to hunt down the Billion Bunny March now too... 8)

Based on the feedback you get and the fact that by 2011 Android WILL BE THE DEFACTO LEADER in the smartphone segment by sheer numbers alone, I hope you strongly consider making an app for all the droids.
As for the free or $.99 thing, I wish you would charge a token charge for it. Yeah, I'm all for gifting back to the community but at the same time development of an app takes time and effort...and I don't know about you but I don't have someone paying my utilities and broadband bills. Recoup at least your basic costs if you can.

I'm also talking out of my ass and heard that Taco Bell will be THE DEFACTO LEADER in food court sales this year at BRC.

Re: iphone app with searchable event database
The "Time To Burn" update for 2011 has been submitted to Apple and should go live in the next week or two. It was built against iOS 4.2 so it should work on AT&T iPhones, Verizon iPhones, iPads, and iPod Touches. It is still free.
See you on the playa!
Terry
Here's what is new:
*The database has been updated for 2011, and includes over 3000 events spread over the week. Search and browse in a variety of ways: Looking for a gifted breakfast on Tuesday? Easy! Want to browse just the classes and workshops? Now you can!
*The event locations are now included for 80% of the events. (Due to camps not being at known locations before the event, this is as good as it gets!)
*The app can now add events into your calendar for you, with automatic alerts/reminders. Don't miss that fabulous Tutu Tea Party at Misfit Circus because you were distracted by HeeBeeGeeBee Healers!
*An update system has been built into the app, to allow me to update the app's internal event database very close to the burn. You will find the "update now" button in the "About" section of the app.
*Special search shortcuts to find LGBT events, and other events recommended by me and my friends.

Re: iphone app with searchable event database
Sounds cool. I'll look for it when it's released. Do you add the events to your database manually
, or is there an API?

Re: iphone app with searchable event database
There is an API, but it doesn't provide all the information I need (it lacks the event type, camp location, etc) so I use the API to grab 80% of the data, then use an automated scraper I wrote to extract the rest.
For info on the API: http://playaevents.burningman.com/api/0.2/docs/

I love your app! I got it last year, but forgot about it once on the playa. It was good info to have on my trip across country when I wasn't driving.

The update for 2011 just went live today.
Be sure to grab it, since one of the enhancements is to allow you to add events into your device's calendar

Duplicate post in Q&A was deleted.
I checked and it was a free app, so it is allowed and has been reinstated. Thank you.
Too bad I have a six year old flip phone, huh?

Re: iphone app with searchable event database
I finally got the chance to spend a little time with the app, very cool! I like how you can tag the events you're interested in, and then add them to your calendar. This way, while I don't plan on using my phone on the playa, I can make and print a list of the scheduled things I'm going to attempt to get to. I have a very bad track record of being able to be at a certain place at any certain time, but this may help a bit.
