Is hanging of banners allowed on any of those towers?

Post by bmnewbie » Tue Aug 31, 2010 4:49 pm

Hi Burners,

I'm a newbie here.
I am planning to propose to my gf at the playa, and I am wondering if it is possible to hang a huge banner on any of the towers (is tower of the Man possible? I would like it to be unrolled down the tower when the moment is right. Where can I find the person in charge to ask for permission?

Thanks!

I'd try one of the "residential" towers, something built inside a camp. Those people might enjoy the sentimentality. Finding the appropriate people (they are on playa already) to allow you to do this on an llc tower and the sort of dance they'd go through to give permission, if you actually get it, would just take too much time.
IMHO.

Hi theCyptofishist, thanks for your feedback!
Can you please elaborate on the "residential" towers and the "llc" towers?
Are the art work posted here considered "residential" or "llc"? http://www.burningman.com/installations ... honor.html
If not, are there a lot of tall towers around?

Thanks!

How about just asking with words?

I know it's a bit unconventional.

Personally, I don't want to be asked anything in front of other people.

newbie - here's the reality.

to do what you are asking, someone is going to have to spend time helping you with your project, instead of doing the things they would do otherwise, like partying, building art, or sleeping.

you need to approach this with _great_ humility and respect for peoples' time.

the only way to do this is to go find someone with a tower you want to use, and ask them face to face in the nicest way possible. remember that they have a perfect right to say "no."

no one owes you this. i know that sounds harsh, and your idea is very, very sweet, but just try to approach this with the right perspective.

everything anyone does is voluntary. you have to get them to volunteer for _your project_, and you're doing it at beyond the eleventh hour.

having said that, if you approach this in the right way, with the right spirit, there are PLENTY of people with tall structures out there, and given a day or so I'm sure you can make this work.

even better if you bring a crew with you (to manage the timing and unfurling), so all you are asking for from the tower people is permission.

also - having said all that - I think you could do a drive-by, un-permitted banner unfurling at the man itself, and no one would mind, as long as you are fast and efficient.

the "LLC" means the official burning man organization. they own the Man and Center Camp.

look at www.ustream.tv/burningman to see what structures look promising!

basically: you need accomplices. send your GF on a long bike ride and recruit some!!!!!

good luck!

Besides, you're asking people who are not in BRC right now. We can't promise you anything! :)

Thank you all for the reply!!!! I really appreciate it!
I already have my accomplices, who are a few of my friends going together.
The only thing I need is the permission on a tower, and really good timing, and an excuse to get away from her for like 30 minutes.

The actually hanging of banner (unrolling and removal from scene) process should take less than 30 minutes. I really wish I could do it at the man itself!!! That would be really really awesome!

I understand that there will be lots of unforeseen circumstances, so I will pray hard that everything will work out fine.

Thanks again!

I think it's a sweet idea.

Have you read the thread "Burning man with the GF"?
