Planning for next year
Planning for next year
I have been following the Burning Man festival since I disovered it in 2006. It looks like 2011 will be my year to go. I know that this years just finished up. Is it wrong for me to be so excited about next years??
"Cars are our way of moving through life. Cars are an integral manifestation of our being. Cars are an expression of who we are, like clothes. But we can drive naked, so to hell with clothes!"
It's wrong for you to be excited about Burning Man, period. It's pretty lame.
According to their website, they're renaming it WHOOMPFEST2011 for next year, anyways. The good news, though, Starbucks will officially take over Center Camp (to be "Eurotrash Theatre"), so at least the coffee will improve.

Ah I see. From your blog and 4.58 daily post count I can see that you have had just terrible experiences with BM. Thanks for the insight as you have totally changed my viewpoint.
I do however think you should share the Gin that is sent your direction in times of disparity. I think I am going to offer Tom Collins drinks from my camp next year. Delicious!

It is not wrong to be that excited. My first BRC experience was amazing. I started planning for next year during exodus! Remember it is nothing without the people there and, though you are excited, try not to have any expectations. Prepare for it now and realize that half of what you bring you will not need but if you left it home by gally you would need it. Read up on all you can and take all the knowledge from these crazy and lovable people that you can.
Oh and Bombay is my favorite. Can I have one too?

Thank you. and I love that plaid jacket. I always wanted to have an old 1800's mens style jacket fitted for a woman's body made for me. but the cost. I'd rather go back to BRC next year and try to help people get there.
Side note: expect thread drift. its inevitable but fun.

You got skills, dontcha? Find a men's jacket you like and whittle it down? Or a ladies jacket and cover it with material you like?FaeTora wrote:Thank you. and I love that plaid jacket. My friend had on a similar-style vest, and she ran grommets up the back and had it lace up in the back. I'm def going to steal that...
Me? Skill? Not unless you want me to identify your grandmothers china pattern. Otherwise I am useless when it comes to that kind of thing. It still takes me half an hour to thread the bobbin. How can something so small be so important and frustrating? oh well. maybe at some point I will break down and have someone make it.

Something I'm going to do for next year is have a shirt made for after the event. It's going to say;
Yes I went to the desert
Yes I had a good time
Yes there were naked chicks
No I don't have pix of the naked chicks
Fuck, I must've answered those questions a hundred times in the last three days alone.

What other people think about you is none of your business.
Quite possibly!. . . Would you enjoy it more if we told you it was wrong?
My expectations are to allow myself to experience everything that BM has to offer and to expand my mental horizons. Most of what I am doing now is just starting to get everything together. Im trying to decide whether or not to rent a tow behind RV or buy a VW Bus. Also, what do you do for showers?FaeTora wrote:It is not wrong to be that excited. My first BRC experience was amazing. Bombay and Tanqueray Rangpur are tied for first with me!

Do a search of these forums, or google it.
It's camping. For a week. In the desert. Most people don't shower. Some do baby wipes, others rig up other things - there's a plethora of information on this message board, and the internet, you can find.
There's also threads and info on vechicle, tent, food, and pretty much every last decision you have to make.
Make sure you do every last google search you can think of, read through all the official site's information and this board before asking questions like that.
Some of us get cranky.

Thanks! I have been through the survival guide several times and read an extremely lengthy post on "My lis for burning man". The only gray area I saw were showers. I think I have found couple of different solutions.C.f.M. wrote:Im trying to decide whether or not to rent a tow behind RV or buy a VW Bus. Also, what do you do for showers?

The RV/Van topic is just a personal choice that I most likely wont resolve until the beginning of the summer or so. Depends on how many people I can meet up with here in my area and possible caravanning.
Also I wanted to add this link for you love of google
Ill have one of these for you next year.
And yes you have my permission to use that on newbs

In my personal experience (camp showers, fancy heated showers, dumping water on my head, etc.), the battery-operated, handheld shower heads work best. Stick one end in a plastic bin of water and go.
How you deal with grey water is up to you.
Just make sure your shower structure is secure (as in, won't blow over) and the walls are good (otherwise there's not much of a point to bathing).

Not to be an alarmist, but if you wait until the beginning of summer, you might not be able to find a rental. Some people have already made their reservations.Roundtuit wrote:The RV/Van topic is just a personal choice that I most likely wont resolve until the beginning of the summer or so. We're already doing our research on next years rental (this year's RV sucked! Just say no to "Cheapa Campa"- huge rip-off! The name itself is the warning, we just chose not to head it) and will probably have it reserved in the next few weeks. Do not wait until summer to reserve an RV- you can always cancel the reservation if you decide to go another route.theCryptofishist wrote:Not to be an alarmist, but if you wait until the beginning of summer, you might not be able to find a rental. After talking to a few friends up here I found one that is going to her first burn next year as well and she has an RV that we are going to use!

Eric - what was the deal w Cheapa Campa? I used them from LA a couple years ago, just didn't tell them we were going to BM, returned it clean, did not have a problem. Was just about to book from SF for this year and saw your post. What's the ripoff threat? PS I bought the Piss Clear book earlier this week, looking fwd to getting the BRC Weekly book in 2018.
(obvy this could have been a PM but I'll keep it googleable for the next person who has this question)
(since I wrote the original post I've heard from someone else that they were uptight and checked the engine for dust if you said you didn't go to BRC...which, fair enough)

My first year, I took a few hundred pictures and there was nudity in many of them. When I showed my photos, that's all people wanted to see. They would quickly flip past the amazing art and installations just to see some bare skin. The next year I fixed that and made an effort to avoid nudity in my photos. It was fun to watch the fast scan of the photos and then I would get them handed back to me. I wish I was smart enough to hand them a copy of Penthouse at that point.
Welcome , not normal for me to give real advice but let me shoot this across your forehead. Expectation's can give way to a bad time on the Playa. Seen it a few times. I don't think you were laying it out with great need to fill, but I thought I'd point it out for any newbi reading along. Your going to have a great time. Do a search about sharing RV's here on the eplaya for some great tips. Some bad stories have been told.Roundtuit wrote:
