Running on the Playa

Post by leslied » Thu Jul 01, 2004 12:01 am

So, I've started training for my first marathon ever... Chicago on October 10. Unfortunately that means I'll need to maintain some type of running schedule during the week I'll be at Burning Man. Are there any groups that do runs on the playa or anyone out there interested in helping a first-time marathoner stay motivated to run on the playa?

It would be amusing for you to always carry scissors while running.

I seem to remember a group of runners mornings as I stumbled to Center Camp for that first cup o Joe. If you can't find a group start your own.

There was a group that met at the Man at 5 or 6 am, i do not know if they were an organized group or just happened upon one another.

I personally would probably die if i ran on or off the playa lol.

Good Luck!!!!!!

The Hash House Harriers had a run two years ago, but that's all I know. I have ran and completed 22 marathons (the most recent in March in L.A.) so let me give you some advice: Run early in the day before the heat turns up and the dust begins to take over. Bring a water bottle obviously and plan your course so you pass by your camp at least once in order to refill your bottle. Get in a long run the day before arriving at BM (considering the time, an 18 or 19 miler would be about right). If you want some more friendly tips, send me a note and we can discuss it.

Oo! So glad to see a thread about exercise on the playa. Thanks leslied! I'm not planning on running a marathon anytime soon (body not built for running), but I am walking in a 60-mile, 3-day-long fundraiser walk for breast cancer research (Phoenix, October 22-24), so I will have to train while on the playa too. Something like 25 miles during that week. Eek! Considering dawn excursions to the trash fence or some such...

Yeah, I was wondering if the Hash House Harriers were out there. I've never come across them, and it seems like they'd fit right in. What do they drop instead of flour?

Mildly curious,

Talk to the BRC Post Office and become the "Express Mail" service.

Talk to "Piss Clear" and start a paper route.

Me too! I'm also marathon training (For the Honolulu Marathon in December), so I'll need to be hoofin' it around in the early morning as well.

And just think of all the cross-training we'll be doing....mwah-ha-ha-ha!

running with scissors is a great idea, make sure they are pointed towards you for maximum fun. You could start your own x sport "running with scissors pointed towards ones face" or "rwsptof" for short.

Bring a bike and cross train for a week, it'll improve your over all time and fitness. Dance like crazy at least two nights. Ride out to the Wholly Other at least three times in the week. Grab a re-cycle cycle from the recycle camp and tour around picking up cans. Help build something, upper body endurance and stregth are esential to distance running There's lot's you can to stay in shape without even realizing it.
