Beat the clock - with really good champagne!
We take a really good bottle of champagne, keep it chilled all week, and at some point toward the end of the week we take it out of the cooler, put it in the backpack, set out on the bikes, and the hunt begins. We look for the right circumstances to open it - we'll know it when we find it - but the clock is ticking, because it's GOOD champagne, and it doesn't like to get warm. We've ended up in all manner of great spots/groups/events (or none of the above) when opening it.
And, as a special fun thing - let the store know what you're getting it for, because you never know - one year the store offered me two of these amazing bottles for the price of one if I brought back pictures of where we opened it, so they definitely "got" it!

And if you're coming from the north this year, well, all years, there is on in Klamath Falls, Oregon. About 200 miles from the playa.

Last year the g/f and I celebrated our first year together. We brought a bottle of very nice bubbly out to the man. We found a nice little spot, said some nice things to each other, then popped the bottle...Well, the bottle was nice shaken from the ride out, so when I popped it, it a pretty loud bubbly POP! damn near everybody within earshot in the man turned around and shouted "HAPPY NEW YEAR!" uhh, it's only Wednesday...but we ended up talking to a guy the had solo'ed out from London for his first burn.
As for traditions, at dusk every night we sound off a train horn. Another is as soon as we find our spot and the vehicles are parked we toast the playa with a shot of Jameson, we also toast the city with another Jameson shot after everybody is packed at the end of the week, and put one shot in the fuel tanks of vehicles for the ride out.

What other people think about you is none of your business.
Even though my plans were drastically different, in the two years I've been it seems to be a tradition for me to pull through the gate at sunrise, dead tired and ready to pass out from lack of sleep... We may break with tradition this year and get some sleep before the drive, but some traditions are hard to break
The entire event is fast becoming a tradition for me - better than Christmas, Thanksgiving 4th of July and New Years all wrapped up in one.

After the hard prep work is done and the trailer is loaded, take a test drive in the mountains and know that I'm almost on my way. That always feels good.
On the way up north, revisit some favorite places and explore new places along the 395. Think about the Owens Valley, have good Mexican food in Bishop, maybe visit Bowie ghost town.
Have a meal at Bruno's before hitting the gate.
First bike ride, go out to the fringes of The Man and attempt to take it all in.
Host a Gin & Tonic cocktail hour at my camp.
Go up as an observer on one of the sky diver flights.
Give away a lot of keys.
Stop at Tahoe a few days before going home.
Wait a while before washing the dust off my car.

I always stop at Sierra Sid's in Sparks to gas up, throw some quarters away in the wheel of fortune machine and get a hot meal. I don't wash my truck (except the windows) so other burners will wave on the way home. And in the long line out of BRC I listen to Liz Phair's first album and RHCP's Blood, Sugar, Sex Magick.

Funny how most people are talking about traditions related to driving in and out.
My bm traditions:
Go say hi to The Man as soon as I can.
Have bagels, lox and cream cheese for the first breakfast, and serve it to everyone in the area who is up early working on something.
Take a break from camp set-up the first evening to do a long ride around the playa and my neighborhood, and start collecting landmarks so I know where I am without needing street signs.
Camp tradition: when someone comes back from an adventure with a story, they start it out "Once upon a time" and end it with "And they lived happily ever after".
Another camp tradition: shouting out something positive we see and our whole camp cheeering. We have been known to do this a bit here and there or to have a full 8-hr. "Yay-Off" on our front porch.
On tear-down day, serve special cold frozen treats to people who are working their asses off.
On final morning, make tons of coffee and look for people who appear not to have their own and serve it to them with the works (real cream, soy milk, sugar, whiskey, kahlua, stevia, whipped cream--whatever someone could possibly want in their coffee). Continue making and serving coffee until I use up all our supplies. (I do this while my honey loads the top of the RV--I think he likes me out of his way)
During exodus, write down everything we can remember about what worked and didn't work with food amounts and clothing, and any good stories we don't want to forget.

I don't have many traditions, but I do have some old standards:

The Almost Fuckable shirt will be worn. Multiple times (that's why I have 3 of them). Odds are 50/50 this is the shirt I'll be wearing most days (a good chance of the "Hate is the new love" shirt as well). This has been with me on the playa since 2003.
A night in Reno on the way home. We've been doing this since 2005 and it really makes the ride home a lot more pleasant.
Thats about it.

Bribe, Uh, I mean Gift Gate with a bottle of Tequila on the way in.
Gift the Mayor of Kidsville a case of MGD for her birthday.
Imagine what 2g's in gas money to get to the burn would buy me in defaultopia and then slap myself for even thinking of such blasphemy.
Oh yeah, and run around naked
